At the dedication ceremony, Chappelle directly broached the rift between him and the student body, making it clear he was hurt by the backlash. According to HuffPo editor Philip Lewis, Chappelle said, No matter what they say about The Closer, it is still [one of the] most-watched specials on Netflix, adding that it was a masterpiece. Lewis wrote that Chappelle described himself as maybe a once in a lifetime talent. Speaking to the student backlash, Chappelle said these kids didnt understand that they were instruments of artistic oppression.

I remember seeing Chappelle at one of his first shows back in 2014, he did a couple trans jokes at that show and it was uncomfortable even then

Dave Chappelle is a master of his craft and I think that comedy should be able to cross any lines so long as it's done in good faith, even punching down if it's done right. The problem I have with Dave Chappelle and his trans jokes is that they're so boring, the punchline is always the same. The last special took a huge hit because he dedicated a whole portion regarding him and his trans joke. The worst part of that segment was when he was trying soo hard to push the narrative that Daphne killed herself because of the online mob.

I mean this whole controversy only cements him to do even more trans jokes now. It is what it is.

Called himself a once in a lifetime talent. Well if he said it, it must be true. Just like how activision blizzard said they investigated themselves and found no wrongdoing besides one or two unrelated cases. Or how OJ Simpson said he didn't do it and even wrote a book about how he would have done it if he did but he didn't. We can definitely take all of these individuals and organizations at their word.

This is my problem with the discourse around Dave's trans stuff.

People aren't saying that you can never make a trans joke. They're saying his trans jokes are transphobic. Whether you agree with him or not, that's the distinction that's being made. I don't think anyone is sincerely saying that trans people are 100% beyond the realm of humorous observation.

It's the same thing with Ricky Gervais. If you want to tell transphobic jokes, no one is stopping you. But don't then whine that you get called a transphobe.

There's plenty of funny things that are shared experiences for many of us that are hilarious. Those jokes are great. The issue is when a punchline boils down to us being trans (or misgendering us or whatever) like Chappelle and Gervais.

For some reason, everyone (more or less) seems to understand this when it comes to race. You can make jokes about racial minorities, but not racist jokes about racial minorities. All of a sudden, when it comes to trans jokes, it's like these distinctions get erased, and people are like "Huh? How can be a whole community be above jokes?"

Now, the real issue--assuming that people are operating in good faith (which some people definitely aren't) is that because trans issues are relatively novel in the public limelight there's a disagreement as to what is and is not transphobic. But, in principle, everyone should be against comedy that is transphobic.

Note for example this New York Times review of Anthony Jeselniks (famously an offensive/shock comedian) recent material, that specifically calls out his trans jokes for praise.
