Looking back to my high school days before I could afford top tier MTG decks me and my friends had so much fun playing. We would get excited to get awesome cards in packs. We would have weeks were one person was the king until we were able to get certain counters to their deck or something. But nowadays its no where near as fun. Get a high end deck that counters blah, and rinse and repeat.

Makes sense When you cant afford it, you never knew what you were going to get, and it was a surprise. Its not like these days where people just purchase specific cards online, or could buy packs until they got a certain card or whatever Stuff like that, I guess

Yeah, Keyforge tried/tries(not sure if its still a thing) forces the random aspect on you since all the decks are random preconstructed. So in tournaments no one really knows what they are gonna be able to play with.

Yeah the fun of building a deck with what you can get from packs and from trades is what I miss

I feel like there are different kinds of enjoyment. Not being restricted is a definite plus. However, given the cost, you can still play the same way as in HS -- except the secondary market is way easier to get cheap essentials, so there's that. If you'd started MtG in the 90s, that wasn't always as much of an option.

I play the mobile game, but there's better deck builders out there.

Yugioh has a structure deck, as in a pre-made deck you can buy, with a turn one win in it

I guess that comes down to a similar philosophy as the difference between world drop loot and targeted farming in ARPG's and similar games: In the former case, the game is a matter of doing the best you can with what you get, since you don't really have then option of trying for specific decks/builds. In the latter, the game becomes a matter of specifically working toward optimizing those builds, which feels more productive as a concrete goal and makes PvP less dependent on drop/draw luck, but once you achieve it there isn't much more room to progress and the game starts to stagnate (especially in the case of CCG's, where it's not like you can really use your optimized deck to farm up cards for other decks the way you can farm gear for alts in ARPG's et al).
