When I was a kid and played FF6 for the first time, I always thought Gestahl looked like a dog. Floppy ears on the sides, black nose on white fur in the front I always thought it was really weird.

I get that hes supposed to be a dude with long white hair and a long white beard, but I just see a damn dog.

For what it's worth, Square knows about this. There's a dog minion (pet) in FFXIV that looks like this, and it's named Gestahl.

It didn't occur to me that he was supposed to be human until I saw some non pixel art of him a couple of years ago. There's non-human characters in FF6 who can talk. You've got the wolf man thief guy, mog, and all of the espers.

I honestly had no idea before making this topic if others saw the resemblance or not. Interesting that he seriously is a dog man.

Even better is whatever the absolute fuck kinda outfit Cid is wearing, as I initially thought it was some sort of hazmat suit, but after seeing his official character art, Im tempted to start singing Peanut Butter Jelly Time whenever hes on screen.

Shadow: My eyes are down here!

Shadows eyes are blue dots in the original game, not the black part of the brown area. The brown stuff is like a ninja headband.
I'd post the sprite but google sucks now and I'm on mobile.
Shadow is not brown (though his skin might be literally black).

What could possibly make you think the big with the obvious eye dot so low on his face isn't it in favor of that glob of pixels higher up?

His eyes are small little dots on otherwise expressive sprites. On a CRT however many years ago I think it's lucky if people didn't think he had a LaForge-style visor.

It's worth playing if you're a fan of the franchise, it's a love letter to the fans, has lots of remixes from other games in the series, and has arguably the greatest stories in the franchise to date (notably heavensward, which is free to play, and shadowbringers), though the beginning is slow it sets up lore for the other expansions and still has its moments. They're making it much more playable solo and allowing players to go through msq almost entirely solo, and you can play free with max level of 60 and no time limit on the free trial. Worth giving a shot, all you lose is time. Also the highest rated FF in like 20 years

Thats really weird how the mind works sometimes on the side sprite pic for Shadow, Ive always known that the brown part is his bandana type thing (as seen in his menu pic) and that the blue dot was his eye. But on the front facing pic, I always equated the brown to his skin, with his eyes showing.

I guess its just because the brown part is sorta where I feel his face should be, when hes compared to other characters. The brown part should be higher on the head. Yet in all the times Ive played this game, I never noticed the two blue eye dots below the brown on his front facing sprite.

Yeah, I thought Shadow had some sort of goggles or visor akin to Cecils Dark Knight armor in the DS remake/reimagining of FFIV. Never thought it was actually a headband.

I thought I was alone seeing him as a dog.

I was 5 or 6 when I first got into the game. Always knew what/where Shadow's eyes were, but Gestahl had a dog face from day one and only in my 30s did I understand how the dog mouth is actually a large mustache.

I don't think I ever noticed shadow's actual eyes. The size of the sprite in game is much smaller than the ones posted here in this topic. I always just thought the headband was some kind of mask or googles.

I played the original snes version in the 90s and yep, I remember thinking both Gestahl and Cid looked bizarre.

Yeah, I had this problem too.

This also had some external influence at the time; Emperor Vandole from Secret of Mana has some of the most incomprehensible pixel art modeling I've ever seen. To this day I don't know if I'm looking at a really long face or a regular face and a metal chestplate. Anyway, there's this random line in the game where Krissie says 'Emperor Vandole is a DOG.' Obviously she meant 'dog' as in liar / scoundrel, but it was such a weird Wooselyism of a line and the Emperor was already so damn weird-looking that as a kid I thought 'maybe he actually is a dog, how the hell can you tell for sure?'

So then Emperor Gestahl came along a couple of years later looking the way he did, and I naturally assumed that dog-faced emperors was some sort of weird Squaresoft tradition.

I never had a problem with Agnahim's sprite as far as details were concerned, but he was the epitome of that era's problem with sprite art not matching the official artwork:

I absolutely always saw him as the one on the left. This is my first time ever even noticing the actual eyes on the sprite.

Dont forget the King of Hyrule, as I initially thought he was actually Agahnim chilling on the throne surveying his new kingdom. Later on I realized it was the King who had been game ended by Aggie long before the events of the game.

I definitely got bamboozled by Shadow and Agahnim sprites.

Agahnim's actual intended appearance looks like he has more matter atop his head than his actual head does.
