I'm going to unironically suggest simplemmo

It's a text based time killer that has a really cool small community

Maybe something action-y like Closers Online. I love the fast paced combat system and there's a popular private server if you prefer to level faster.

Final Fantasy 11 (maybe).

Granted I last played it in like 2004 or something but....

when I was playing, it was either the most or one of the most hardcore mmos. Very grindy. You had to spend many many hours on any type of progress. Basically no matter what you were trying to, it would take a long time to get it done. It definitely wasn't a casual mmo

The only modern mmos I have recent experience with is WoW and Star Wars The Old Republic

WoW can be hard but also easy depending on what you are doing. Old Republic, is pretty casual I would say. In fact, leveling to max level these days is baby level simple. I actually think it's TOO easy. They made the pre end game content super easy after one of the updates. It wasnt like that originally . It's almost impossible to die. That easy

Go Outside.
It's free to play, but the microtransactions are a bit ridiculous.

Unfortunately Outside has some major flaws. It's really hard if you try to do combat. And if you die, your character is deleted and you can never make another one

I haven't played in a while so it could suck now. But DC online was fun.

half-joking half-serious answer: Ragnarok Online.

Outdated game by today's standards, and yet, if we include private servers, still have a ton of players. They must have done something good and right if people are still playing the game today, even if most people do so in private servers instead of official ones.

Seriously though, if you are playing RO in today era, unless you hate private servers and only want to play in official servers, then unfortunately it's probably not a good idea to go to official server, unless you're playing in the Korea or Japan server. RO private servers just generally tend to be better.

Private servers push updates much faster than non-Korea/Japan official servers can ever hope to achieve, and they tend to have much higher exp and drop rate to make leveling/drop grinding not as tedious, so you don't need to play for long before you reach max level.
Nowadays, with how many updates the game has gotten over the decade, I feel like you'll enjoy the game more in private servers than in official ones. No one has the time to grind to level 99 anymore, let alone level 250 (yes, official RO server lets you go to level 250 now, with Job 4). In a 1000x exp private server for example, you'll only really start grinding for exp from like, level 240 onward, which is just fine.

A small cheat around that. When choosing your religion, spec Hinduism and you'll get get to roll a d100 to choose a new starting race/animal when you die. Does lock you into being a good alignment if you want to roll on the better charts though.

Yeah, if ff14 is too grindy then I dont even. They give you masses of xp for everything and you pretty much instantly start out levelling the quests

Everquest 2 started a progression server like 3 weeks ago and it's actually very populated. While it's a progression server over a 18 year old game at this point it's super easy to find groups.

This won't be your next big MMO or anything, but it is fun.

Costs 15 a month, I don't think you even need to buy the base game.

FF14 has the best levelling experience, story, and respects the player (complete your patch content and unsub until theres more content, its recommended by the devs)

WoW does not respect players anymore but has the best combat still.

None of the other MMOs bring anything to the table to match those
