I personally find the practice a bit antiquated, but my stepmother's family still does it. I've convinced my dad and stepmother to accept a verbal thanks, but whenever I receive something from my stepmother's side of the family, Dad and stepmother ask that I send a thank you card. I normally don't see them in person ever so I get it, but I still see it as an inconvenience. I personally never expect a thank you card when I give or mail a gift. I'm curious if I'm alone in my dislike of thank you cards.

To take it a step further, do you call, text, or email somebody thanks if they send you a gift? Again, I normally don't expect it since when I generally give a gift I'm doing it as a kind gesture with no strings attached. But maybe I'm just lazy. I'm grateful, but I just hate having to write a thank you.

Only for my wedding because my parents would not shut up about it.

Its a super lame old person practice.

Wedding thank you cards were the worst. Sending thank you notes to everyone I had already thanked the day of. Just a time consuming, miserable ordeal.

These thank you cards suck because I just had a kid. I'm fucking tired and don't want to have to worry about these damn cards. My free time is precious.

Just don't and if anyone asks. "I am not made of money, cards are expensive!"

I used to be obligated to do so for my grandparents. But since they've passed away everyone else in my life is open to a text or a phone call instead.

I used to hate it as a kid but now that I only ever have to write 1-2 at a time I just power through it.

Change the topic title to "Are you a female over the age of 65?" and the answer would be the same.

it's considered polite to send cards for any gift you receive. Personally, I only do it for very generous gifts, or gifts sent for special occasions (e.g. weddings).

No it's 2022. Waste of money, time, effort, and Earth's resources. You'll get a verbal thanks or a text/e-mail

Just say you're saving the trees

I actively avoid receiving gifts as an adult. When I host anything I explicitly say "no gifts"

But if I were in a situation where decorum demanded a thank you card, I'd suck it up and do it. Eight year old me absolutely loathed doing it, and they lived to tell the tale.

Who is sending you gifts so often that you have to train them to stop expecting thank yous?

If someone was going crazy like that I'd rather just make them stop sending gifts!

I hated thank you cards. They felt trite and meaningless, and I never had any idea what to write in them beyond just "thank you for the thing."

That said, I'm holding onto my godson's he sent me a month or two ago from his First Communion.
