Looking for a good RPG on the 3DS!

I have all of the Pokemon games, along with DQ8.

Bravely Default and Bravely Second. There's some weird pacing issues in Bravely Default's story, but the battle system is so good. Plus if you like Final Fantasy, Bravely is actually a spinoff of FF. If you're aware of how Magic and Jobs work in FF, you already know how to play Bravely.

If you have access to GBA games on that system the Medabots RPG games are good. Theres two Medabot games that came out in the USA. A fighting game thats SORTA like Smash, and an RPG. Both games have two versions. The RPG one is like Pokemon in the way you gotta collect all the parts, sadly the game either requires you to trade or action replay since some of the medabots are only encountered once per game. Also, you have a couple save-reset moments because the parts you get after a battle is random.

If you are looking for story and game play its fun. If collecting, it'll be a pain

I'll double vouch for this. The game is one of the truly greatest RPGs. If you're getting the Perfect Chronology version go for "Perfect Mode" NOT "Append Mode."

The game was originally a DS title, but the 3DS version added new scenes, sidequests, and a new True Ending. To get tot he True Ending you have to do the new sidequests. In "Append Mode" you do the original story first, and then do the sidequests/side chapters at the end, all in one go, which is a slog, and most of the rewards end up useless.

In "Perfect Mode" you have the option of doing the side stuff alongside the main story, which feels more organic, and you can actually use the stuff you get as you need them.

In any case other good RPGs would be

Stella Glow (one of my favorite hidden gems on the 3ds)
The Mario and Luigi rpgs.
The Etrian Odyssey Series
SMT IV and SMT IV: Apocalypse

And depending on whether you played the DS versions or not, the enhanced ports of SMT: Devil Survivor 1 and 2, and Strange Journey.

Radiant Historia is a great game, I feel like I remember used copies of the game being worth around $100 before they did a second run of it.

this, start with devil survivor overclocked or smt 4
soul hackers is also good and has a sequel coming out this year but SH1 should not be your first smt

Rune Factory 4 is the best rpg of all time

Nowhere near the best but I echo the RF4 recommendations. Am playing through it now on PS4. My first experience with the series i hope 5 gets ports as well.

RF5 is probably coming out in the next couple months on steam, so other platforms are definitely plausible

the game is definitely not as good as 4 because of the growing pains of shifting into 3D (like far lower boss variety, since 4 had basically everything from 1-3), but it's a very solid stepping stone for future 3D games
