it really is. I bought my first car at 18 for $1250 back in 2011.

1999 Nissan Maxima with 230k miles, ran like new. Original everything, cold AC.

Theres a 1999 Infiniti I30 which is literally a Maxima with an Infiniti badge with 220k for $8000.

I got lucky and bought a 2013 Camry back in 2018

replaced my 2001 Impala

it was still $11000 though >_> but only 47k miles

I sold my 2015 Dodge Dart I owed like $7900 on to Carvana back in February for $9000. It was nearing 100k, dinged and scratched to hell, and the suspension was going out.

But now my wife and I just have one car. Its been fine most of the time since we both work from home full time, and the extra garage space is nice since we can just pull into the middle, but there have been several times where a second car would be great.

Ugh.

I only lease. Only buying until my dream car becomes available.

I dont want a big payment, already paying $500 a month on our current vehicle plus getting a home equity loan soon to do a bunch of home improvement projects so would rather be able to buy a used car for cash

Also yeah used cars are going for the price of new cars rn. Almost impossible to find preowned deals

I bought a 78 T-bird in 2005 for $900, thing ran for a decade. Those days are gone.

I bought a 2018 Corolla with 14k mi for $17k and change OTD in 2020, and Geico estimated it at $24k ACV when I renewed my insurance last year.

I have a 95 Camry. Oil leaks like crazy and the transmission grumbles from time to time but it's at 230k miles and still running

If your looking for reliable, go for a Corolla. That thing lasted me a good 10 years before crapping out, and even then it was because of the bad weather in my area. Also... if someone is charging even 4 grand Canadian for a car with 300,000 miles on it, run hard and run fast.

My altima ONLY has 150K miles on it. I'll sell it to you for a reasonable price.

I didn't really feel like shifting through all the used cars for that rare gem, so I just got a 2020. I imagine I overpaid for it, but at least it's something I really like.

Holy shit that's a lot of money for that many miles.

Honestly Id lease a Kia Forte or Toyota Corolla if I could get one under $200 a month. Like the good old days when those models were easily had for those lease prices with zero down as long as your credit was fine.

I have credit in the 760s but Id probably still need to put like 3k down to still end up with a $300 payment on one

Yeah, the used car market is terrible. My Honda dealer finally stopped pestering me about buying my 2016 Civic (these are going for $18k-$20k used in my area) from me. Bet they'd make a nice profit off of me if I caved lol.

OP, I have no judgement on how you want to light your money on fire, but if your credit is good enough to lease, knowing you need x money down and a small monthly payment, then why are you bitching about a $5k total price? Get a car loan for like $10k over 48 months (about 200/month sans interest), and use that $3k down or so to get a 5-7 year old car.

ETA: Or, don't. I don't give a fuck how you want to spend your money as long as it helps you sleep at night, but your logic of leasing and total price are contrasting one another.

So I have a fully loaded 2014 Mazda 3 that I need to sell and I was thinking of asking $9000 for it. Maybe I'm going to ask too little? It's the Grand Touring with all the option boxes ticked. HUD, leather, adaptive cruise, ect... 116K miles. Some dings and scratches but no major damage. Brand new tires too. I spent almost $1000 on those tires.

Im going back and forth between wanting no payment ($5k or less since I have like $5k set aside) or a small payment on something new with a warranty

Im also running on little sleep so Im not exactly thinking logically

If I were you, I'd take the 5K and use it as a down payment and buy something CPO with a warranty (when I bought my aforementioned Corolla, I got a year of ToyotaCare and RSA and a 7yr/100k mile extended powertrain warranty included), assuming you can find something in your price range.
