This is assuming their status is green checkmark/available or equivalent for Slack/other messaging platforms.

80/80

I mean more professionally than "got a sec" - something like "Good morning - I have a quick question on X process, do you have a sec to chat?"

Is it rude to just call without seeing if they're truly available first?

At a lot of business Teams has functionally replaced the telephone, at least for internal communications. I treat it the same way. If it isn't a particularly urgent matter I'll ping them if they have a second to chat, but like it certainly isn't rude to call them if they are green without the heads up. It's not like it rude to call people on the phone without texting them first.

No? If they don't want to answer, they don't have to.

Asking for their availability might be nice, but this honestly sounds like a really dumb thing to complain about.

Oh, coworkers? Well idk that might be different depending on the situation.

But in an actual friendship, there's nothing wrong with calling without asking. Not like they have to pick up the phone. I'd question the compatibility of myself with friends who would actually get angry at this tbh.

People who call with no warning are the absolute worst. And those same people usually have some stupid bullshit question they could have figured out on their own but were too lazy to do the research, so why not bother you instead.

Is not rude, no. But at least for me, if someone does a zoom call without warning me first, I'm 99% unlikely to answer it. I don't like taking calls on what is basically speaker phone. If you warn me first though, I'll connect a headset and answer.

This is about co-workers, not friends and family. Usually you are busy and don't want an instant interruption. So yes, calling is rude too.

Teams/Slack/Zoom are used by a wide variety of companies/entities.

This is the first I've heard of calls without a chat to be considered rude though. It's really no different than calling someone's desk phone.

Its not the rudest thing in the word, but then I also might not feel obligated to take the call without a heads up.

It takes just a few seconds to ping ahead of time and confirm the person is available. So why not? I understand in the past just calling someone was commonplace, but in this day and age it just seems like common courtesy to give a quick ping.

Yeah but the reverse is true as well. Doesn't take long to look at a call and not answer it, or even answering it just to say you're busy. Which I've done numerous times.

And idk about work, but people really should keep their phone on vibrate if they don't wanna be arsed with stuff like that.

This.

I get called, by co-workers, on Teams all the time. I just answer the call. I don't feel irked at all. I actually prefer that over:

>hello
*30 seconds later*
>how was your weekend?
<Good.
>I have a question, can I call you on Teams?
<Yes.

This is my biggest pet peeve. More so when they message just with hello and wait for a response before messaging you with what they want to ask.

If youre going to do that, just put everything in the initial hello message.

I guess with the people I work with regularly or multiple times a day, yeah I do say got a sec. But moreso for people who are less likely to be expecting you to reach out to them at any given point during the day.

Oh 100% great point too. Every time someone says just hey or hello (statements, not questions), I don't respond. It's saved me many a pointless conversation because they rarely follow up.

I hate using the phone and will go to extreme lengths to avoid it in my personal life, but the idea of pinging someone at work for permission to call is absolutely insane to me. You don't need to do that and it isn't rude unless you're calling someone off the clock.
