https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/7/23156361/european-union-usb-c-wired-charging-iphone-lightning-ewaste

European Union lawmakers have reached an agreement on legislation that will force all future smartphones sold in the EU including Apples iPhone be equipped with the universal USB-C port for wired charging by fall 2024. The rule will also apply to other electronic devices including tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld video game consoles, and e-readers. Laptops will have to comply with the rule at a later date.

The legislation has been under development for more than a decade, but an agreement on its scope was reached this morning following negotiations between different EU bodies.

The legislation still needs to be approved by the EU Parliament and Council later this year, but this appears to be a formality. In a press release, the European Parliament stated clearly that the law will be in place by autumn 2024. By this date, all devices covered by the law and sold in the EU will have to use USB-C for wired charging.

Great stuff to hear.

Probably.

More importantly, it hopefully means Apple's method will die as don't see them making two methods of charging.

Apple got around this last time (when micro USB was mandated) just by selling adapters.

Basically, yes.

It's making every electronic device have a standard charging port and not companies like Apple making their own that you have to spend far too much on and not use your standard ones you use for everything else.

Pretty much everything else already uses C, so really only going to be Apple suffering. And Apple customers benefiting in the long run.

This time it seems the devices themselves have to have it, not an extra device. Likely to specifically counter that.

Yes but the forced widespread adoption of USB-C in general is probably going to kill off integrated type A ports sooner rather than later.

I don't see that being a thing. Most flash drives are still USB A. Tons of computer peripherals, many of which don't even have batteries to charge are USB A. Printers are USB A. Etc.

This law only applies to mobile devices. A desktop computer isn't required to have any USB C ports on it.

Yeah I'm for it, I like usb-c. It charges the same way no matter which side you plug it in unlike the old charging cables, so I'm definitely appreciative of that.

Regular USBs are good too, but usb-c is very convenient for phone charging

Even if this still allowed for micro-USB, it'd be an improvement. The big deal is the removal of proprietary connectors.

I've never thought of usb-c outside the context of a phone. Could it even be used for pc? Is it better than the regular usb?

And isn't there already a usb 2.0 and 3.0 with the blue underline, how does that fit into the debate? Is usb-c better than regular usb for stuff like reading the data or transferring the data or whatever?

USB-C can be used as either the host (ie: like on a PC) port or the client (like on a phone / other device) port.

Yes, it has numerous advantages over regular USB. "Standard" laptops tend to have a mix of both types these days, while ultraportables might have both or might only have USB-C (but you can get a USB-C to USB-A adapter to connect older devices). Desktops are most likely going to have one or two USB-Cs and a heap of USB-As still.

USB-C is the physical connector. The underlying electronic signal could still be either USB2 or USB3 (though certain other signals, eg. DisplayPort, can also be transmitted over a USB-C cable).

USB c also has standard rapid charge and faster data transfer. It's better in every way which is why it's phasing everything out.

Many devices don't conform to the rapid charge standard and use their own rapid charge. This is one of the reasons I switched away from OnePlus phones. They used a proprietary configuration for rapid charging.

But yes, still plenty it won't cover - but for your average person a lot of those will be irrelevant. And still really only matters for iPhone users, given any other standard electronic device uses usb already.

Most things have gone to type C. All I can think that uses anything else in my home are my cheap head phones.

Some types something about A. A is it thing that connects to the computer or the charger so that is going to stick around.

Things like apples odd point and USB mini and Micro are going to die. Mini is a almost dead now, and Micro is a not far behind.

Laptops are going to be strange because very few of them use USB type-c to charge in the first place and they all have unique power requirements usually part of their brick.

You're not going to be able to charge a laptop using a wall mounted USB plug.
