Games that really reward exploration and don't just feel like a box ticking exercise.

Some that come to mind in recent years:

  • Breath of the Wild. I went in blind and played blind, and enjoyed the way quests were presented in a more open ended way than in previous zelda games.
  • Subnautica. The existential dread here. The way you don't find things out except through vague audio log hints. Loved that.
  • Outer Wilds. Maybe one of the most fantastic games I've ever played. Pity it can't be played a second time.

Super Metroid when you take that one elevator up from where you get the Power Bombs in Brinstar and you return to your ship was definitely an awesome moment!

That and Pokemon RBY when you take Diglett's Cave and end up back on route 2 was also neat.

Just thought of another, Final Fantasy XII

It's kind of cool that you can go off and explore certain zones before you're meant to, and do particular Hunts when you're underlevelled for them

Red Dead Redemption 2.

there's the linear, main campaign, but outside of that, there's a really dense world to explore.

you can hunt legendary animals, go on treasure hunts, and that's just scratching the surface.

  • Dark Souls - Loved how the world was interconnected with so many secret passages and stuff.
  • Dishonored 2 - Finding all the different stuff in each chapter was great. This game really impressed me overall.
  • Dying Light - Traversing the map and finding new weapons is a lot of fun. This is also a game where I didn't hate your weapons breaking, as it made sense and you got a good amount of time out of your weapons.
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn - I know people shit on Horizon for the markers, but the world itself was cool and I liked how roaming friendly NPCs would engage machines/hostile humans as they encountered them. Bonus points for being able to fast travel at almost any time.

Oblivion, at least for the first 60 hours or so. After that, you've probably at least explored most of the map and have a good understanding of the biomes and dungeon types as well as what to generally expect in each tiny village you come across along the way. Somehow Skyrim felt far more empty in comparison because you wouldn't find as many random houses just a little ways off from the road but far enough in you couldn't spot it from the road itself.

I'll echo WoW, though part of that was growing up on WC2 and finally seeing Hillbrad hills etc in person

Going further back, the Sierra game Hero Quest/Quest for Glory - while other Sierra titles had exploration, this was the first where you could wander around finding things and the plot progressed at your own pace

Pokemon Legends: Arceus has a real "over that next hill, there might be a new kind of Pokemon" vibe.

I never thought I would feel that in a Pokemon game ever again.

This. You're just sailing around, and BOOM, you've discovered a hidden temple, a cool rainbow colored monkey, or a weird levitating mineral or some shit. It helped that the game seemed absolutely huge, and most of the dungeon maps were also great, and the story was constantly thrusting you into lost continents and junk. Perfection.
