WNBA star Aerial Powers spent part of her off-season thrashing men in pickup games at 24 Hour Fitness gyms. Several videos she posted of her torching the competition at local gyms went viral on social media. Powers told Insider she loves beating men who "talk junk" and "don't respect women's basketball." Aerial Powers took an unconventional approach to ramping up for the 2022 WNBA season. And the Minnesota Lynx star went viral for it. The 5-foot-11 forward, entering her fifth season in the WNBA, spent part of the last seven months playing pickup games against men in local gyms. She refused to back down to anyone who doubted her hooping abilities on the basis of her gender and, on several occasions, filmed herself schooling men who "talk junk about us that don't respect women's basketball." "I fucking love it," Powers told Insider with a grin. "There's so many men that look at us and don't look at us as athletes. They look at us as just women that try to play basketball." During a spring USA Basketball camp in Minneapolis, Powers reflected on one of the first clips she shared to social media of such an interaction. She had gone to the 24 Hour Fitness just looking "to get some cardio," she recalled, but her "competitive edge" took over as soon as she jumped in the game. "That's how I was raised," Powers said. " I mean, that's how I became the player I am, playing with the boys every day at 6:00 PM in Detroit, Michigan. Make sure you put that in there."

The video, which has more than half a million views on TikTok, shows the 2019 WNBA champion scoring bucket after bucket as men on the opposing team helplessly attempt to guard her. By Powers' own account, one man on the other team grew so frustrated with her dominance that he tried to guard her himself. When that didn't work, he tried to fight her. "The guy started I'm just gonna be straight-up he started talking shit," Powers said. "And then when he started talking shit, I was like, 'Oh, I gotta show him what I could do.' And then nobody on the team could guard me, you know? So that video went viral." Powers insisted that she doesn't hit the court looking for trouble. But when men disrespect her simply because she's a woman, she won't hesitate to make them eat their words. "Most hoopers that play basketball, they know we got it and they don't talk shit," Powers said. "They don't come on social media and follow us just to talk junk." But when it comes to "those guys" who do talk smack in their Instagram comments and Twitter mentions, Powers says she's "got something for 'em." And she has a TikTok audience ready to eat it up.

I live down the road from Montverde in Orlando, that place is essentially an NBA factory as opposed to a high school. RJ Barrett came from Canada to go there lol.

Also doesn't matter at all since people watch these sports to see the best players, the best players are all male because men - more specifically a subset of men - have the necessary attributes to play at the highest level that females lack. Beating up randoms at a gym ain't gonna change that, nor help the image of the WNBA.

This isn't a conspiracy. WNBA will never measure up to the NBA because the talent is inferior and they have failed to capture an audience in other ways.

Lol I seriously doubt that. Ive been hoopin for most of my life and Ive seen guys do things the WNBA players wish they could do.

Is this another video of a female pro athlete dominating regular guys from the street or guys who played in college and didn't make any professional league? The average WNBA player can't be Brian Scalabrine right now.

Guys talk about these college athletes beating WNBA players as if they are part of that class of athlete just because they're men themselves. They have no idea how far away they are from that level. Most of these guys haven't played organized ball once in their life.

People want to see the best doing what they do best and because of that womens sports is always going to be less popular than male sports

Unless it's gynmastics or volleyball where people watching it don't care about the sport and just want to oggle chicks.

For me, its very simple: I want to see the highest level of skill and athleticism in any sport, so when men and women both play the exact same thing, the men will clearly always have the superior product. Why would I spend time watching womens basketball when the NBA season is already too bloated? I have other things to do with my time.

I was a huge fan of the 1996 womens Olympic gymnastics team, they had spunk, personality, and womens gymnastics is much more interesting to watch than the boring shit the men do. One on one sports are also better for this in terms of women, specifically tennis, I can enjoy a womens match due to the skill on display, but also realize Serena would get thrashed by almost every man on the mens tour.

Yep. I remember a few users in a trans topic implying that they could beat Olympic level women. That was exceptionally deluded. Your 'bone structure' doesn't beat the sheer amount of training it takes to make it to an elite level.
