It depends which side of the aisle you are on. It wasn't something the left was focused on, no, with the exception of the disgusting Merrick Garland incident.

The evangelical right has appeared to be focused on nothing other than the supreme court and abortion, however. They'll vote for someone who violates more or less every one of their values so long as they appoint judges who oppose abortion. That sounds like an overstatement but, given the results of 2016, it's unfortunately not much of one.

It was talked about a lot because the republicans had literally just ignored the rule of law and stolen a seat earlier that year under the Obama administration by simply not holding a vote for his nominee and waiting for his term to end because they said it wasnt fair since it was his last year in office

meanwhile they express rushed their nominee through in Trumps final month before he lost re-election

We need a total and complete revolution of this shit show. Rip and tear. Plant something better in the wreckage.

It's something that comes up nearly every time a polarizing candidate is running and one of the Justices seems to be getting old enough for there to be a risk of retirement/death. Both sides tend to get paranoid about it and say things like "We can't let the other guy get elected, or he'll have the power to appoint and sway stuff for years."

It also comes up afterward, when appointments actually occur, where the "other side" to the President tends to be obstructionist assholes bent on subverting anyone they pick. Because the hope is that you can eventually push through a compromise candidate or at least wrangle concessions that will benefit you.

Like most aspects of the US government, the two-party system fucks things in general, because everything becomes more of a game between two opposing teams than it does individuals sincerely doing what they believe is right or what will fix things.

The two party system and career politicians are the root of the vast majority of problems we have with government. Which is why some people always like to point out that George Washington warned against both of those things, and we basically ignored him.

That's mainly because you're a foreigner, whose entire understanding of the US political system mostly comes from what you hear people say on the Internet. Because there's a very strong bias online to emphasis the problems with the Right while downplaying the problems of the Left.

You have a very skewed perception of what's actually going on.

Though it's not like you're alone in that - plenty of Americans have a childishly simplistic view of what's going on as well. Which is what makes most political "discussions" on sites like this or Twitter so painful to slog through.

...lolwut? It was a major talking point in 2016. Really makes you wonder how much people pay attn to politics besides the most superficial elements.

lolwut? Tell me you know nothing about American politics without saying you know nothing about American politics. Want to know how the concept of a filibuster entered the mainstream? Because Democrats used the threat and action of a filibuster to repeatedly obstruct GWB. What word is there for torpedoing a SCOTUS nominee? Borking. How'd we get that term? Because of how Democrats and the left torpedoed Robert Bork's nomination.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bork#%22Bork%22_as_a_verb

Most of the shit Republicans later caught flack for doing were things that were initiated and still practiced by Democrats, including their attempt to bork Kavanaugh.

But you don't think that's dirty enough? You had Democrat Claire McCaskill who helped a lunatic GOP candidate win his primary because he posed less of a threat to her in the general election. She spent campaign money HELPING a GOP candidate to disrupt the primary and ensure she had an opponent she could beat. Democrats don't play dirty? They could give Ric Flair a run for his money, wooooo!

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/08/todd-akin-missouri-claire-mccaskill-2012-121262/

Most of the dirtiest tactics employed today were first used by Democrats.

Lots. I recall many debates involving "Left-leaning" content creators playing devil's advocate for Trump, with others indicating the risk of a Conservative-majority Supreme Court.
