At the risk of turning it into the next GOTG vol. 2 and watching it crack the top 5, Happy Death Day must be next!

I also note that I am now bottom of the outlier table. Does that mean that I have amazing taste or boring taste? You decide.

18. Split (254 points, won tiebreaker with an adjusted 219 points)

Why I Chose It: M. Night Shyamalan has always been one of the most contested and ridiculed names in horrors and thrillers. For every The Sixth Sense he makes he accompanies it with a Lady in the Water or The Happening. However, the mid-2010s were a renaissance for the writer-director, first hitting us with The Visit, a quaint little found footage horror, and then, Split, an intense psychological-horror-thriller that demonstrated what Shyamalan does best - unique concepts pulled off with style and twisty mystery. Split was a huge success at the box office and along with The VVitch, helped transform Anya Taylor-Joy into one of the biggest movie stars of the late decade to now. Split also played into the superhero boom, as, with the film's biggest surprise as a stealth sequel to the Bruce Willis superhero thriller, Unbreakable, Split was a supervillain origin story on top if its horror ambitions, with the next sequel Glass going full in on the concept.

Jcgamer107 - I was really impressed by James McAvoy Acting Class: The Movie. M Night Shyamalan shows that he can still write and shoot suspense really well if he feels like it - this might even be his 2nd best movie after Sixth Sense. Great pacing in revealing information to the audience, keeping us guessing about Kevins motivations, and the motivations of one or two characters not within Kevins brain. Great surprise at the end too - Ill certainly be watching Glass in the near future.

Fortybelowsummer - Somehow, I had forgotten that this was an M. Night Shyamalan movie until I rented it today (the last day before lists are due). I think its a fine return to form for a director whose reputation notoriously tanked after being the hottest thing going in Hollywood a hundred years ago. (I feel like his rep is on the downswing again after Old, even though I havent seen it yet, but thats beside the point). The real star of the show here is obviously James McAvoy, for whom playing one character really well is too easy. He really inhabits each of the split personalities, and its impressive to watch, particularly when he slowly changes from Barry to Dennis without the camera cutting away. Great supporting cast, especially the psychiatrist who I thought would save the day but sadly couldnt avoid the Beast. The reveal of the Beast was satisfying and gave me kind of a Red Dragon vibe, all super strength and philosophizing fury. Very good and now I feel like I have to check out Glass next.

Inviso - This is one of M. Night Shyamalans best filmsalthough thats a very low bar to clear. Its not perfect, by any means, but its still extremely entertaining. James McAvoy carries the film spectacularly, truly relishing the ability to play a plethora of characters in the body of one man. Is he hammy at times? Hell yeah he is. Hedwigs weird-ass Kanye dancing is so bizarre that it loops back around to being a HIGHLY enjoyable scene to behold. But really, I just enjoy the concept so much: a guy with D.I.D. who has different physical characteristics, depending on which personality hes working on. Anya Taylor-Joys final girl is also pretty decent, starting out as the aloof character thats able to manipulate Hedwigbut even she eventually breaks down and realizes that shes in danger, desperately fighting back and running for her life. The movie lives and dies by its concept, and capping it off with a tie-in to Unbreakable just seals the deal as a memorable film. Its still a LITTLE too campy to be the best of the best, but its an enjoyable watch for a film almost two hours long.

Lightning Strikes - And they gave him a funny name, too. What was it?
Mr. Glass.

I kind of just want to write THE ENDING OF THIS FILM IS SO GOOD AAAAAAAAAAA and leave it at that but I should review the actual majority of the film rather than just the ending. First things first, lets be honest, this films portrayal of DID, while not intending to be hateful (and if anything it seems to be attempting a positive portrayal) is extremely far from reality and could definitely lead to some people getting unfortunate ideas about the condition. With that said, James McAvoy uses this flawed premise to deliver an incredible performance as a whole host of characters who seem like real personalities, not just a caricature of a stereotypical split personality as you often see. There is also a strong lead performance from Anya Taylor-Joy, who here along with The VVitch established herself as a new horror icon.

The film is suitably tense, and does a good job of building its story from what starts as a typical kidnapping thriller, slowly layering in more elements of horror before truly turning into perhaps the first, or at least the first modern, superhero horror movie. This makes the film slowly more disturbing as it increases the tension leading up to its masterful reveal at the end. And what a return to form this was for M. Night Shyamalan, who had done The Visit, which was decent, before this but really got back into the swing of things with this film. Even without the ending it is still an effective thriller that is a fun spin on the genre and is generally an enjoyable time.

With that said the ending exists and is quite possibly the greatest twist of M. Night Shyamalans long history making twists which is saying a lot. The idea that this is a stealth sequel was so novel, and a unique experience to the opening night cinema-going experience where you really want to have seen this before the word gets out. When Bruce Willis appears and utters the final lines of the movie, it produced the most hushed whispers of any film I have seen. I really think that a film that can still make connections to previous works exciting and fun in a world with so many franchises and shared universes is special and for that I loved this film regardless of anything else to do with it.

4/5

Biggest scare: I actually think the opening scene is probably the most chilling, and the most real.

PrinceKaro - So there's a guy with multiple personality disorder who has one of his personalities kidnap three girls and I guess the others are sorta ok with it.

In order to escape, the captives must interact with a lot of crazy characters livng in their captor's mind, largely focusing on tricking the childlike Hedwig into letting them go.

I do not claim to be a psychiatrist, but a lot of the medical accuracy surrounding the kidnapper's condition is well, uh, dubious, to say the least.

The end part of the film is where everything falls apart, where what was a very engaging psychological thriller suddenly turns into 'bwahr rarwh, ima monsterrr'.

Though it starts out with imparting a sense of humanity and pity to Multiple Man, it eventually degrades into the usual portrayal of those with mental illness as being some sort of subhuman creatures that are to be feared. Wow, someone struggling with their psychological health? You better watch out because they might become a berserk cannibal randomly, lulz. Fuck you.

Though it is certainly not as bad as a lot of Shyamalan's later movies, it is clear the man's glory days are far behind him. The trademark twist is nothing more than an easter egg of an afterthought where theyre like 'hey remember that other movie that was actually good, well this movie is in the same universe'.

What a splitting headache.

Suprak - B
I liked Split. Et cetera. I feel like I kinda just want to leave the write up there and not just because Im working on this late at night past deadline. I saw Split in theater, a decision that I cant really explain because there hadnt been an M. Night Shyamalan movie I liked since the early 2000s and I cant even remember why we had decided this would be worth a visit to the cinema knowing his track record but Im glad I did. It isnt perfect. Theres some weirdness to this and it lost me for a bit about two-thirds of the way through. But it was still surprisingly good. More than just competent. It was interesting and different and well shot and not just the long trail of absolute flaming garbage I had gotten used to from Shyamalan.

Most importantly, James McAvoy is incredible in this. He does such a good job swapping between straight laced pervert to little kid to matron to actual monster that it is incredible. This is a movie that requires James McAvoy to be incredible to work, and anything less and the movie becomes really dumb, really quickly. Watching a character with split personalities shift between personalities and one of them is a monster sounds dumb on the surface, but somehow here it isnt. Or it is kinda dumb at times, but McAvoy is so good that I was at least willing to overlook it more than I would normally be willing to. Anna Taylor Joy is also good in this, which is nice because most of the movie is really just a struggle between these two. There are other characters here, including an absolutely useless psychiatrist that doesnt really do much but try and validate the existence of Keven/The Beast in our minds (most of her lines are sort of a no this isnt TOTALLY IMPLAUSIBLE stop thinking that kind of thing), but honestly they dont really matter other than to put McAvoy/Taylor Joy in more context. And thats fine, because both of them are really good (especially McAvoy) that I was really into the story.

There was a point where I feel like the story almost lost me. Like I really liked the first two-thirds or so of the movie, but when The Beast turned out to be a real things I distinctly remembered going ehhhhhhhhhhhhh my first viewing. Like it was a movie mostly grounded in realism to that point. I mean, not entirely, but close enough that when he Banes out and starts climbing on walls, youre like what the hell am I watching now. Where did this come from? It almost felt kind of silly and the themes theyre working with are a little muddled. The emotionally abused are something more than human? Because theyve dealt with trauma and arepure? Trauma makes you climb walls and immune to bullets, too, I guess. Trauma is this huge theme here, and you even see it in the ending where Anna Taylor Joy comes out alive and is suddenly strong enough to confront her uncle. Theres also that interesting scene where she cant shoot her uncle but is now able to shoot The Beast, so there were parts here that kinda worked for me. But there was definitely a chunk of the movie, from that transformation scene in the trainyard until after Kevin flees and juicily shouts something about Anna Taylor Joy being pure (any anything involving the psychiatrist, really), that I was reconsidering how much I liked the first big chunk of the film.

But this was one M. Night twist that somehow saved the movie a bit for me! I somehow did not know what the twist was going in. We got to the end and I thought there wasnt one and I remember still liking it but being decidedly more eh that I had been before. But then you see Bruce Willis sitting all weird in the diner and I was caught legitimately offguard. I didnt think I could be surprised by M. Night any more, but the hey this was secretly a part of that superhero universe I had THE WHOLE TIME was something I literally didnt see coming. And it makes the earlier part of the movie work just a bit more, I think. Like they take it past the point of just well people with DID can change their body chemistry to the point where theyre Spider-Man sort of and brought it to oh yeah there are some superheros in this universe btw which makes me a bit less critical of what was going on with Kevin from a logic perspective. I know why they withheld this context, but without it things felt almost silly to me. This somehow makes it a bit less so. Some of the themes are still a bit muddled and even on the rewatch I wasnt entirely sold on the beast aspect of it. It makes things a bit less creepy to me, if anything.

Still though, I definitely enjoyed this. Not my favorite film on the list but there is enough here that is good that I would still recommend it. The cinematography is really good and I remember seeing it the first time and being impressed that I was bored of the facility by the halfway point of it. It feels like it could get stifling, but it works well within the context of the movie and it is well filmed so it isnt just boring abandoned spooky underground tunnel. And the acting is great and the tension is definitely there and it even manages to be funny and charming at times. Just a well put together movie, which honestly isnt something I knew Shyamalan could still do. This is another movie on the list that I wish there wasnt a sequel to. This worked really well for what it was, and Glass tacked on to the end of it almost feels unnecessary. Taken for what it is though, it is really engaging and engrossing (particularly in the earlier bits) if you are able to overlook just a bit of weirdness on the backend.
Et cetera

FFDragon - Is this really a horror movie? It's a great movie and McAvoy kills it but...

Johnbobb - There's a lot that can be said about M Night as a writer and director, but he's definitely ambitious. Making a surprise cinematic universe out of a movie you made almost 2 decades earlier, without it feeling forced and while still maintaining its own as a very entertaining horror movie? There were so many ways this could've gone wrong (as is the case with many of M Night's projects, unfortunately) but the interesting idea paired with outstanding showings from James McAvoy and Thomasin the VVitch made for a pretty great movie.

Plasmabeam - What impressed me most about Split was James McAvoys performanceand wow is he convincing in all the different roles he assumes. One minute hes chilling, then innocent, then suspicious, then heartbreaking. Every time hes on-screen, its magic.

That said, the overall story felt too disconnected (pun not intended, I swear). Were supposed to be rooting for the girls to get out, but it was hard for me to care when they made essentially no effort to fight their way out at the beginning. Youre telling me three teenage girls cant take down one man? I know they said that he appeared strong enough to overpower them, but honestlythe guy weighs what, 160 pounds? I didnt buy it, and I failed to get invested in the girls struggle because of it. Nor did I care for the therapist lady either; it felt like she existed mostly for info dumps until the final act.

Also, I wasnt a fan of the supernatural turn that this one took toward the end. Although the supernatural elements were hinted at during the psychology conference, I wanted Split to remain grounded (And yes, I know that the director was trying to make a superhero trilogy, but still).

Rockus - I dont know if I entirely get everything James McAvoy is doing here but hes going hard and Im kind of here for it. Could lose a bunch of the therapist stuff but the last third of this is really strong. Its at its best when its just being pretty exciting schlock and McAvoy is going all out. Really like Haley Lu Richardson and Anya Taylor-Joy and really the cast overall is pretty solid. I dont really care much about its links to Unbreakable and the interest in building a franchise out of it so I found that bit in the end kind of deflating but otherwise pretty enjoyable schlock for the most part.

Snake - This dude has DID and manages to keep a neat, organized computer with his 23 personalities all listed out on the desktop like hes about to make the most banging GameFAQs ranking project ever.

Red13n - Sometimes a dumb twist can really just make you not care about the rest of a movie. This was interesting when it felt like a bunch of split personas were fighting and manipulating the rest, maybe with some grand horrifying plan or whatever. Maybe the reveal would be neat and interesting. Nope it was literally just unleashing some monster persona somehow in a way that never felt particularly organic. The horror could have easily been the conspiring personalities working up some master plan, but we end up with a generic monster personality that feels like it doesn't serve anybody's purpose. There was an interesting concept on paper here and then someone took that paper, crumbled it up into a ball and threw the ball and that was the whole last act of this movie.

Thesmark - The first thing people talk about with Split (well, besides the reveal at the end) is James McAvoys performance, something I think is massively overrated. Hes doing whats a very basic acting class exercise, theyre just big broad characters and hes doing a lot of them. If you want to see somebody doing really great work in a sort of similar vein, watch Jeremy Irons in Dead Ringers where its only two characters but hes playing two identical twins with nuance and as actual human beings. Beyond that performance at the center, all you really have is a plot about trauma giving people superpowers which feels a bit skeezy and some kidnapped young women (with two actresses in Anya Taylor-Joy and Haley Lu Richardson working way, WAY below their talent). I will probably be in the minority here on it but I dont like Split.

Tom Nook - I've seen 10 out of M Night's 14 directed movies, and Unbreakable is the only one I'd actually call good (and mildly so). I don't know why I keep watching his movies. I guess because you never really know what you will get from him, and I keep hoping it's going to be something that he has yet to give, but they always still end up feeling so novice. That's my bad for expecting anything. This movie was ok. It held my interest to see how it would play out, but I also can't say I was impressed with really anything that happened.

BetrayedTangy - I swear Shyamalan makes some of the most frustrating movies Ive ever seen. This man has been in the game for over 20 years now and yet somehow, he keeps making the same mistakes.. Great actors embarrassing themselves with awful dialogue? Check. Coming up with a cool concept just to completely botch it? Check. Touching on sensitive issues with the grace of a sloth? Check. Trying to set up a crossover universe? Okay that ones admittedly new, but it still makes absolutely zero sense. All that said, and, I manage to still walk out of his movies feeling relatively entertained. Hes managed to carve out his own niche of so-bad-theyre-good movies and I have to applaud him for that. Split might be a trainwreck, but at least its an enjoyable one and its still somehow one of his better movies.

My 28 is still around, and it baffles me. My 25 is still alive too, but I was already mentally prepared to have that one stay around undeservedly.

My 30, 26, and 24 haven't dropped yet, and with the way this list has been going, I'm afraid they might crack the Top 10.

So I watched the deleted scenes on this one and there is an entire B plot of how the old psychiatrist lady wants to bang her downstairs neighbor who is half her age. Like four scenes in total dedicated to this. It has nothing to do with anything but I wanted everyone to know it because it is super weird.

Thematically, it plays into the idea being split, but I guess they wanted everyone other than Kevin to be a straightforward character.

Yeah it's from an 8-bit pixel art throwback game called Faith. Cool, creepy little game - it's basically about a priest who returns to a haunted house a year after a botched exorcism. I definitely recommend it! It's still free on itch.io I believe or it's like a $1 for the Deluxe Version. And there's a chapter 2 if you like it!

Out of curiosity what did everyone think of Old? I thought it was a bit better than most of his stuff. That was one of the few instances where his concept kinda delivered imo.

I thought it was alright. He did some interesting things with the concept and some of the deaths were surprisingly brutal. Wasn't a fan of the exposition dump ending. And of course not everything really made much sense but it's easy to let slide with a film like this.

I liked the concept but I think the script could have used a few more revisions, far too many clunky ways the people talk through the experience and information about what's happening that took me out of a lot of moments. Probably could have shot a few more takes too, some of those performances were just off and I know I've seen a handful of its cast really deliver otherwise in other movies.

I think it's shot pretty cool though. Gets a lot of its one location which doesn't have that many different features so it does this thing where it's framed close-ups of faces against background subjects and stuff, thought that was really cool.

Both Conjuring and Split were movies Id seen before and both were ones I think I liked better on a rewatch.

I remember Conjuring being pretty boring and formulaic, which I still kinda think but it was at least very well made and I thought the horror was well done. Family stuff still sort of soured things for me.

My first viewing of Split was sort of like:
Like this
Like this
Really like this
REALLY like this
Wait
REALLY? Thats where were going with this?
This is kinda dumb but ok
Like this
Oh ok I think I really like this again

It definitely helped knowing the twist so I could just enjoy the movie. McAvoy and Taylor Joy are incredible in this and it is shockingly well shot for what I was expecting of Shyamalan.

17. IT (225 points)

Why I Chose IT: Stephen King's IT is one of the best selling American novels of all time. Any adaptation of it is bound to get a lot of attention - both in 1990 with the Tim-Curry led miniseries, and now, an appropriate 27 years later, with the Andy Muschietti-directed, modernized IT. And attention it got indeed - IT is now the highest-grossing horror film of all time, grossing just a little over 700 million dollars - an insane number for any horror or otherwise R-rated film. In one film, IT perfectly captured the enduring legacy of Stephen King, 80s nostalgia, a relatable coming-of-age story, and of course, the visceral fear of the unknown in an increasingly uncertain 2010s decade - the IT in all of our lives.

Inviso - Of the three It movies Ive watched (and dont take this as any sort of indication of a future It: Chapter Two ranking), this is the one that I think does the best job as both a horror movie, and as an adaptation of the book. Where this succeeds so well is telling the story (which alternates back and forth between the past and present in the book) from the perspective of the child characters. The monster in the movie is overwhelming to a child, in a way that isnt anywhere near as terrifying for adults. The Losers Club cant rely on their parents (those of them with decent parents to begin with) when the embodiments of their greatest fears start fucking with them. It just really amplifies how terrifying the whole plot is from their perspective. Beyond the horror aspects, these feel like real kids who band together from their shared outsider status, and it just makes for a great coming of age story as well as a solid horror film.

Red13n - Evil clown does the most generic villain thing ever by feasting on intangible fear. Or it actually feasts on kids. Or actually it just drags them down into the sewers and makes them float. It isn't entirely clear. But these kids live in a terrible town where everyone is abusive or a pedophile and none of their parents give them any supervision whatsoever. I think this made way more sense in the timeframe of the original, but in this more modern take, not so much. As usual, don't think about it. Unfortunately not all the kids are as fleshed out as they should have been, and by the 100th time the clown has the opportunity to kill the kids but stalls by talking or whatever you are going to realize he always makes the most common villain mistake. It only grows a little tiring by the end. But eventually you'll get to the point the kids realize it really is just a dumb clown and they can very satisfyingly beat the shit out of it.

BetrayedTangy - Bill Skarsgard really just went and carried this movie up to my number 10 spot, didnt he? Like seriously Im not kidding, this was sitting down in the bottom third for the longest time. Then I rewatched the opening scene and was like yeah, I cant do Pennywise dirty like that. It very well could be the best performance on this list. He does such a good job of switching between menacing clown and otherworldly nightmare. The movie just wouldnt be close to the same without him. As great as Pennywise and some of the scary moments are, this movie isnt without its flaws. For one I fucking hate these kids so much. Especially Wolfhards character. I get it, kids can be pretty annoying, but that doesnt make the movie more entertaining. It just makes me wish Pennywise would just eat the kids already and get it over with.

Lightning Strikes - Youll float too!

This would be another example of what we can call blockbuster horror - a very large scale horror film with a bigger budget and a massive scope. In the case of It, we take perhaps Stephen Kings most sprawling and epic novel, in many ways his magnum opus (except for that one part) and adapting it on the grandest possible canvas. To do this, the story is divided into halves which does mean youre not getting the full story here, but luckily the structure of It is such that this works and it does feel like a duology rather than one story cut into two pieces. It still would have been nice to see Muschiettis five hour cut that combines the two, hopefully it will get released someday.

It is very much a fantasy as well as a horror, and plays the two parts of the film together well. This film can be summed up as What if The Goonies fought the Thing? which is a pretty enticing idea on its own. You have a really well-realised group of child protagonists in the Losers, each of whom could stand as the rare example of movie kids that arent just not annoying, but are extremely likeable. All of them go through the journey into their adulthoods together and there is a sense of a genuine bond they share. They are counterbalanced by a showstopping performance as Pennywise by Bill Skarsgard, who had a lot to live up to based on the great Tim Curry performance from the not great miniseries. Adding to this key conflict is the town of Derry itself, which very much feels like a character in the narrative by itself. You really see the rot at the heart of the town. Its not just a story about some kids growing up while fighting a clown, its a story about the death of small town America and how tragedy can cripple a whole community.

This is a film that is massive in scope yet remembers to be personal in tone and character. It is scary and exciting, but also funny and touching. In many ways this is a true horror blockbuster that works on many of the same emotional levels that Marvel movies work on, in a good way. Its a real all-rounder of a film that is extremely finely balanced. Given the mixed record of Stephen King adaptations in cinema this film is absolutely triumphant.

4/5

Biggest scare: The painting is an original scene for the film but is on a level with anything from the book if not above.

Plasmabeam - Better than the book its based on. No, really. I read the Stephen King novel in 2015 and found it to be a slog because it opens by showing the main characters as adults before flashing back to their childhood. I knew the kids couldnt die, so whenever they faced a deadly situation, I never truly feared for them.

The 2017 movie, however, corrects this issue by delivering a tense, straightforward story and a fantastic cast of characters. Pennywise has star-power, and while the story pulls its punches a few times, its nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable.

Fortybelowsummer - We all float down here! Im not sure what the consensus is, but I think Bill Skarsgard is the best Pennywise. Tim Curry is the legend that we all know and love, but Bill brings the killer shapeshifting clown to another level. Unfortunately, the CGI in this remake is a bit overblown and sometimes distracts from the natural creepiness that he provides. Like hes actually scarier standing there with a balloon than with a gaping mouth full of sharp teeth. If youve seen his audition without makeup, then you know. Still though, the special effects do add a lot and every time one of the kids was about to face their fear it ended up being horrifying. The story itself is an all-time great from the mind of my hero Stephen King, so I was sold from the beginning. All of the kids are pretty good actors here and there are plenty of legitimate awesome and scary moments. I think this was a remake that WAS necessary and mostly delivered everything a fan could ask for.

Suprak - B
I remember really, really enjoying this one when I saw it in theaters. I somehow had never seen the original, but the previews for this looked fantastic and it was one of the few movies Ive seen on opening weekend since I had kids. The opening scene here is one of my favorite openings in any movie on this list, and it hooked me in from the beginning. I feel like if the movie couldve matched that intensity for the entirety of the film, this mightve been number 1 for me just based on how much I liked most of it. But I feel like, for all the film does well, it does start to run out of steam after a while and there are parts here on the back half where I was kind of losing interest.

Im not entirely sure when I started feeling diminishing returns, but I think it was the scene where the hypochondriac gets chased by the leper and Pennywise is just sort of chilling in the back yard. I mean, at a certain point it feels like Pennywise is terrible at his job because you dont have to be an ancient eldritch clown monster to kill six ten year olds. I know there are theories for this if you dig deep enough, but it isnt like the film itself gives it to them, and at a certain point it just feels like theyre trying to figure out a way to cram more jumpscares into the film. Sort of a we need to do a jumpscare but dont want to kill one of the cast members so you have Pennywise show up, go BOO HEY IM SCARY DONT FORGET, and then a fat ten year old outruns him and Pennywise is forced to try the same thing like ten minutes later. It almost felt like stalling, and I was losing interest in the horror elements of the film the longer I watched.

That complaint aside though, there was a lot I really, really liked about It. The town itself was truly unsettling, and I was always much more tense when you see like the pharmacist creeping on Bev or Eddies mom smothering him or any one of those things. The Pennywise scares were fun sometimes, and there were a couple that actually got me to jump. But it was what Pennywise was doing to the town, how the people were acting, how a car would drive by someone being brutally beaten and just sort of look and move on, that was the stuff that really worked for me. The jumpscares almost felt quaint in comparison. Like, predictable. The scene would start turning weird and Id just sit there and wait for a monster to pop up and go boo. I could brace myself for stuff like that fairly easily. I was less able to brace for Bevs father stroking the side of her face and asking her if shes still his girl. When its trying, It is actually fantastic at establishing the horror. It just feels like sometimes it went for the cheap, easy scare much more often than it should.

Still, really enjoyed the movie as a whole. Skarsgard is fantastic as Pennywise and really established the character as something memorable. The child actors are all shockingly good. Loved the creeping dread and the story was a lot of fun ad it was just a really entertaining horror film from top to bottom. Jump scares felt a bit cheap and I think I might actually look back at it perhaps a bit less fondly because of how much I disliked It Chapter 2. But taken by itself, ignoring the significant drop in quality of the sequel and all the bizarre weirdness of the coke fueled source material, this was just a really well done horror film. I definitely recommended this one to friends when it came out and Id still recommend to basically anyone thats a fan of horror. It might not be totally perfect, but it gets so much right that it really does feel like one of the most iconic horror films of the 2010s.

Jcgamer107 - I liked this a lot when it came out, but for me it has already started to age poorly, in part because of the completely bloated, sappy - and maybe unnecessary - Part 2. The child actors and Bill Skarsgard do a great job, however, and the flute lady gives me the creeps.

PrinceKaro - A group of annoying and unrealistic children band together to stop an evil clown who has stolen someones little brother and is terrorizing a small town.

The kids in question all have bizarrely exaggerated character traits and can't go five minutes without throwing out quips with weird sexual humor. I mean it is not even witty, it is just like 'yo momma's vagina, ka-chow!'

Through a bunch of detective work fraught with logical fallacies and arbitrarily knowing things they shouldnt know (such as how Pennywise can't hurt those who dont fear him), they break Bozo's kneecaps and form a literal blood oath to keep the monster sealed away. They then all die of AIDS.

Pennywise was a character with some potential, but it seems they couldn't decide on a consistent modus operandi for the ghoul. It's like he feeds on fear and it makes him stronger but sometimes he doesnt scare people but rather tries to tempt them instead?

I feel this story could have been a whole lot more, but a much of it was flubbed on bad characterization and cheap jumpscares and that is quite a shame.

Johnbobb - Between this and I Am Not Okay with This, Sophia Lillis has to be one of the most promiment young actors out there. Even in a cast of primarily good child actors she stands out among them. Similarly, after Hemlock Grove, Bill Skarsgrd was already on his way to being a horror icon, and revitalizing Pennywise in a way that could actually compete with Tim Curry wasn't a small feat. Is it the best, most original film of the decade? No, of course not. Is it the best horror remake of the 21st century? Probably, yeah.

Tom Nook - It's hard to talk about this one without comparing it to the 1990 movie (fuck off about calling it a miniseries). Tim Curry seemed irreplaceable, and while I'd say he still did it better, I think this Pennywise was perfectly serviceable here. I also don't think the 1990 movie was all that good either, but a lot of that comes from how dull the second half is, and that's largely just due to the Stephen King's story...it's just not a good second half. With us ranking only the 2017 version covering the first half of the story, this is a huge benefit, as the segment when they were kids is far better. However, as with plenty of horror, I always take issue with villains who have unclear and godlike powers. Pennywise seems like he can do anything, to anyone, anywhere. It really lowers the stakes when he sometimes kills and sometimes doesn't, even though he can do anything. I enjoy the protagonists here, which goes a long way for boosting this up the rankings, and there are some good individual scenes involving Pennywise, even though I think a lot of it is total nonsense, some of it is pretty satisfying in a vacuum. I guess I can say this movie feels sort of like walking through a haunted house that doesn't have much of a connected theme, and you are seeing a few scares along the way.

Rockus - For a big studio horror movie this was surprisingly pretty decent, and an upgrade to the TV mini-series that everyone seems to love, or at least acted like they did leading up to the release of this remake. While Bill Skarsgrd is no Tim Curry the rest of the movie improves greatly over the mini-series. Getting some strong performances from its young cast and giving them a lot of character is what mainly makes this work, even if it probably spreads itself a little thin by not having the time for all of them. Richie and Mike could definitely have been fleshed out more but thats what happens when theres a pretty big cast in an ensemble like this. Better than expected considering I dont care for the old mini-series and think the book is kind of an overstuffed mess to be honest.

Thesmark - Bill Skarsgard and the kids (especially Sophia Lillis) really give it their all and many of the sequences with the childs fears are great (the ones in the bathroom and the library being the clear standouts); with that said, I fundamentally didnt connect with a lot of its approach to horror. Theres way too many jump scares and every one of them yells at you with this booming scary noise which I really became numb to after a while and at over 130 minutes, thats quite a while even if its adapting half of an extremely long book. Its weird that the weakest parts of this horror film are mostly the horror elements, when it gets the coming of age story and the performances down as well as it does. Its a mixed bag but Im fairly positive on it overall.

Snake - I love 1990s IT. Its the single most influential horror film in my life - the one that started it all for me. I first watched it when I was six years old and it did its job of scaring me for life. But I loved it! I wanted more. I wanted something and someone to scare me as much as Tim Currys Pennywise did, and some came close - Candyman, Samara Morgan, but none so much as Pennywise. So, I was excited when they were remaking the miniseries 27 years later (talk about one of the best coincidences of all time). Its a film I enjoy - but it did not satisfy that same scary itch the original holds. Technically, almost everything here is better - the performances of the children, the special effects, more time to breathe and develop the characters, the sequences of horror. Yet, the one thing that loses me is a big one - Skarsgard is a great Pennywise, dont get me wrong, but Im not a fan of ITs design here - I actually prefer a simpler clown-look. Currys Pennywise is a clown youd still see in everyday life, while Skarsgard just feels too fantastical and old-fashioned to me. The film also relies too much on jump scares rather than psychological prey on fears & phobias - an appearance of IT is always this big, loud set piece thats vying to shock an audience rather intimately and quietly scare an individual. I loved the 1990s series where someone could just be driving by in a car and Pennywise would just be on the side of the road, laughing and mocking the characters as they rolled by. Horror is just better done with so much less. Like I said though, not a bad film by any means, the drama of the kids lives is something I do prefer here, and the way they cross-over with each other and grow as friends and people and battle the personification of their fears is compelling and so easy to connect to. Kids riding around on bikes battling supernatural evil will always have such a cozy, nostalgic vibe.

FFDragon - Give me back Tim Curry.

I think IT is one that sank a little over time for me? I definitely loved it when I saw it in theaters. If anything the overabundant response might've hurt it for me a tiny bit, with it eventually almost becoming hard to take some of the iconic scares seriously

that being said I still really enjoyed it and the surreal "fears magically coming to life" horror is one of my favorite types of horror

I'm stunned that IT didn't crack the Top 15. Stunned. Like, I'm shitting and vomiting uncontrollably right now.

I didn't watch Part 2, so perhaps I was fortunate to not have my overall IT experience tainted.

My biggest issue with Part 1 was the pulled punches or "Selectively Dangerous Villain Syndrome" as I like to call it. Many horror movies have this problem where the monster is an unstoppable menace at the beginning of the story, then when it meets the main cast, all of a sudden it gets clumsy or decides to hand out plot armor. Part 1 suffered from this big-time, but the rest of the movie was thankfully a blast.
