I've never been to Japan though so I don't really know how hard it is to get by, but it just seems like a huge barrier to have to deal with on a daily basis. To be honest, it would be easier for an English speaking person to learn the Japanese language, but we tend to push Spanish and French (and Latin) above other languages when it comes to second languages here in America. Japan isn't as xenophobic as media's like to depict them. A lot of the ignorance and laws (like gay marriage still being illegal) are normally from the older generation still being in power because of the work culture.
