I'm interviewing people for our level entry position that pays 75k with benefits at a CPA firm since yesterday. So when a guy comes in this fresh out of college and graduated with a humanities degree with no experience in the accounting field while wearing really wrinkling business attires: immediately starts his "introduction" by asking for 100K with 1 months worth of PTO and full health and dental coverages for his benefits. I felt like JJ from spiderman when I asked him if he was being serious while smirking at the same time. I get it he was probably told by people to high ball it so we can negotiate down, but considering we're already getting +1000 resumes for this job position I really have no interest in wasting my time with someone like this. Especially looking at his resume alone doesn't give him enough negotiation power. I don't blame him though, I blame our recruiters for letting this guy get so far as to even get interviewed to begin with. In my 7 years of working here, this was the fastest "nope" I ever done for an interview since.

For those of you who are trying to get into a high paying career, especially for a level entry position, make sure to have negotiation powers before high balling like this. Also on your resume, make sure to list your "achievements" and not your "responsibilities". Achievement means you've done some form of leadership abilities as oppose to a person who just follows orders. You can stretch the truth, but never outright lie about anything in your resume because I've met too many clients to know when they're lying or not.

If anything, I did give the guy actual REAL advice on how to negotiate and which types of jobs his major will help benefit the most. It was a waste of my time, but hopefully the guy got something out from it. But I mostly blame it all on the recruiters for letting this guy in to begin with. I've had people with unremarkable resume's be able to impress me in the interviews before, but this was the first time I've experienced something of this delusion.

No reason to pick that guy over 1000+ applications. If TC can't find a better person after going through 1000 resumes that's a completely different problem.

The idea of people coming into interviews in a freshly pressed suit is a dated concept. Anyone still enforcing that crap is probably a shitty HR rep who has no real idea what the company does so they have to judge the candidates by the most superficial means possible.

Generally I agree, but if you're applying at a CPA firm, and walking into the interview with an expectation that you will command a six-figure salary, I think it goes without saying there's a certain standard of how you are going to be expected to present yourself.

You should have been given his resume to screen well before the interview. Speaks volumes to inefficiencies within your organization and with you. Regardless of the f ups on the part of the recruiters, you should have put the kibosh on it before he came in.

I've had interviews with people with very unimpressive resume's and absolutely wow me in their interviews. I was gonna interview this guy with the same expectations and got total garbage. This was definitely the first time in my 7 years of working here that I've seen something like this happen. Like I said, I don't blame him but I did give him some advice on how to do better in his next interview if he applies for a high paying job that is very competitive.

Yeah we don't have a strict dress code here in the West Coast branch unlike the East Coast. Most of us wear Polo Shirts and slacks (even the women) because it's more comfortable. It just was very noticeable in the interview that his outfit (from top to bottom) was very wrinkly. It was first impressions that the guy probably doesn't do a lot of interviews and after interviewing him I was probably right in my first impression. If you wear a suit, it's sticks out like a sore thumb if it's wrinkly.

My previous work place hired an accountant with a humanities degree but at least that individual had wotk experience in accounting. There simply were no other applicants. The market is crazy now, so it can be tough to find someone with the typical qualifications for certain roles unless its a highly competitive offer. This results in some people having ridiculous expectations. I actually ended up with a position that paid 15k more than I initially set out looking for.

Believe whatever you want. I just figured that with over thousands of applications our recruiters wouldn't be handing me baloney interviewees. Yesterday's interviews went really well, it was just this morning I'm sharing the worst one I got in my 7 years working here.

I've had interviewees who high ball like crazy before, but most of them always had something to offer on the table. Ultimately I don't make the hiring decisions, that is for our exec teams to do when it's the third round. I'm just the first round where I screen people giving my recommendations. There's been plenty where I give my highest rec and they never get hired and some that don't get my rec but get hired anyways. I'm not perfect, but I definitely know this guy was absolutely not worth it after interviewing him. I have 3 more interviews today I got to do (after lunch), don't think any of them will be as bad as this mornings.

Good for him for trying to see how high he could get. If you have a salary that you won't budge on, then that should have been in the job listing and should have been told to the guy prior to the interview.

If it was, then my bad.

I remember when somebody I knew as a contractor tried to negotiate his salary when he got an offer shortly after I did. I told him you can't negotiate a government salary because there are pay grades, we looked it up online together when I told him that, but it wasn't good enough so he tried to negotiate it anyway

Guess who missed the hiring window and had to wait a year for another offer lol

$75 is a lot to some people, and people who come from more humble backgrounds don't know all the fashion rules. I remember I went to my first interviews in an oversized jacket my dad got from unclaimed lost and found, and if course I didn't have a nice belt and shoes either.
