Basically a continuation of the story from the X series. They are similar in some ways, but the levels tend to be "interconnetced" vs. just being independent stages. Big thing is the cyber-elf system which acts like X's upgrades, but they add more then just body parts, heart containers, and sub-tanks. They are almost a full-blown RPG system.

Oh, and you play as Zero the entire time, hence Mega Man Zero.

If you like the X games you will like them too. Most people ignore it because it was GBA exclusive.

Nope. You still have to select a stage/level like in X.

The next 2 games in the series, ZX and ZX Advent, are closer to metroidvanias if you're specifically looking for games in that genre.

I probably should have clarified what I meant by "Interconnected"

Basically instead of selecting a stage and completing it, you select missions from a home base and complete them. In between missions, you are basically free to roam around this base and find ways to enter the stages to backtrack and pick up cyber elves you missed. Nothing is blocking progress other then incomplete missions.

Granted, the early games (specifically the first) didn't really do this well, but it got better as the series progressed. And like T0ffee said, ZX and ZX Advent are more like metroidvanias in their execution, although I still really wouldn't classify them as that.

Action platformers. They're not perfect, but they're pretty good, with Zero 3 being the best of the bunch. The games reward you for gitting gud, you get more toys to play with the better you do. The elf system is weird in the first two games, and it's outright atrocious in the first one. WAY too grindy. 3 and 4 overhauled the elf system and made it more enjoyable to interact with.

They're linear platformers, but have the framing device of a metroidvania... all the areas are explorable, but pointless to do so unless you're on the mission to go there.

edit: They're also quite good, with Zero 4 having a very good optional boss

They're slightly expanded Mega Man games (ie, 2D action platformers) with some very light RPG elements and a mission system. I haven't dug too hard into the series because the first one is awful. Relentless mind numbing cheapness to pad it out beyond 2-3 hours. The series apparently gets better from 2 onward.
