Probably, as that would be made obvious in the articles coming out. However, they might just not have gotten the chance because they got the shit kicked out of them.

I think the lesson to be learned from this is if you plan to do a statement-tackle of someone, fully expecting to get arrested but willing to make your point regardless, dont carry a weapon. That fucker is looking at significantly more serious charges, and if they had no intention of using the knife, they added years to their sentence for no reason.

They might have been for all we know. They may have had a more elaborate plan involving the replica gun, but things didnt go as planned.
They might have been prepared for whatever consequences were coming, but they werent prepared to make their plan work. It seems like they vastly overestimated their ability to tackle someone.

This is an "Everyone sucks" moment.

You shouldn't be tackling people like that, but beating the shit out of an attacker already neutralized and restrained isn't right either. Nor is being a transphobic asshole after the fact.

At best, youd see a reduction in liability in a civil claim.
Its important to remember that fighting words has to do with limitations to the first amendment. So, if someone were to use fighting words, that doesnt shield citizens from assaulting that person in any way, it allows the cops to haul them in and charge them for the words.
It is generally considered outdated and horrible, has gotten no traction in the courts since, and all stems from an incident involving someone using fighting words by calling a cop a fascist.

Imagine being in jail in L.A. for trying to kill Dave Chappelle. I doubt the attacker will be too popular in jail.

I agree. Violence against trans people is still not okay even if they had committed rape by deception. The proper handling is through police & the courts, not violence.

He's made fun of literally every group of people, except for possibly the Inuit. That's his entire brand of comedy. If you go there, you're expecting him to mock everybody, and possibly including you. Don't like it? Don't attend his events, it's that simple.

No matter what the comic says, barring a direct call to commit violence against others (and no, nothing Chapelle has said has been a call of violence against anyone), the audience has no right to physically engage the comedian and said audience member deserves whatever ass-whooping and prison sentence they get as a result of it.

His last comedy special literally had a joke about how he didn't care about white people dying from prescription drug overdoses, and nobody minded. I don't recall his terfdom ever making fun of any trans people dying. If anything, compared to how he's handled other groups of people, even other marginalized groups of people, he never came off as comparatively vicious towards trans people to me.

Some people don't have the luxury to "not take life so seriously" because who they are puts them at severe risk of violence *especially* when public figures like this has been 'comedian' decide to make them a target of hate. It isn't necessarily that he hates trans people, but he emboldens those that do.

Besides that, white people are (quite possibly) collectively the least vulnerable group of people on the planet. Transgender people are among the very most vulnerable of all, and repeatedly punching down on us only makes things worse.
