As long as it's a TV-edit, it doesn't matter at all. If they were trying to edit all future releases of the film, that'd be moronic. Even if it's something truly, grossly offensive, removing it in an environment unaffected by age ratings is just feelgood nonsense. At most, include a warning beforehand.

I hate when they edit stuff for TV and they try to get voicealikes to say a different word. Like if they censor ass and you hear a vaguely similar voice say BUTT instead and it's really loud and out of place.

Eh, we've always done this. Even in the less PC 90's, blackface gags were edited out of old cartoons. I'm sure you can find TV edits to be more in line with current sensibilities all the way back to the 70's.

And the former ended up with Donald Duck shouting 'yippie-kay-yay, Mr. Falcon!' while fighting a character named Falcon Graves in the Ducktales reboot, so it had its merits as well.

Idk why people in this topic are trying to argue this like Spiderman is a real person in 2022. The character said something that was "acceptable" at the time and isn't now. Even people who would have been considered not very homophobic in 2002 probably held misconceptions about sexuality or internalized stereotypes that would make be homophobic for someone today to state.

Is 2002 Spiderman a bad person for making this comment? No, I don't think so. If 2002 Spiderman was brought to the present, informed about how society has changed and those sorts of attacks are unacceptable, etc. and still was like "Nah I'm going to keep calling people gay to get under their skin" then yeah, he's kind of a bad person for that.

I think there's sometimes merit to the idea of "I'm attacking this person based on their masculinity even though I don't actually think masculinity is important but they do", but I think if the way that you're attacking that is through attacking marginalized groups, you're still being homophobic/sexist/racist/etc. in most instances. And I don't think Peter Parker had built up enough of a relationship with his opponent to try to argue that he was doing more than just throwing out a "Haha you are straight but I'm pretending you're not, guess you're not a man!". (Also the "You listen to black supremacist rap!" comparison is weak which is why you never see people using that to attack racists)

I think the only "negative" of editing like this is that you sort of lose historical context for movies and I generally am more in favor in movies being finished works rather than the approach of going back and making revisions all the time. However, TV edits are already compromising some of this anyway, so I don't really think there's a reason to be mad about this particular instance.

Doesnt rreally bother me if its for TV edit.

While its important to be sensitive towards specific groups, I still dont think we should cut out all insensitive comments from movies and shows because if you are too worried your movie might offend someone your media comes off as artificial. What I think people forget is that its hardly ever just the villain or bad guy who says, for example something offensive to the gay community. Many times its just a jerk or a someone trying to impress their peers.

Considering this movie came out in 2002, having Spider-Man ask if his boyfriend made it for him was rather tame since kids saying F****t in school was rather common at the time.

That and Spiderman insults all kinds of people in the comics anyway. He makes fat jokes about the Kingpin all the time for example. Sassiness is just part of his character. He's not a paradigm of perfect goodness like Superman.

That and he's playing a bombastic jerky WWE style wrestler in this scene anyway whom are known to make off color insulting comments about their opponents.

I'm a gay man and did not find that line offensive at all.
I thought it was harmlessly authentic within the supposed David vs Goliath trope playing out in the scene.

Self-flagellating Americans with a saviour complex insist on being "offended" on others' behalf (who more often than not find such a thing to be condescending and insincere) for the sake of social clout among their circles, when it really just makes them look pathetic. And it's been leaking over into the rest of the world for a while.

I think back then, kids used words like gay as an insult without any connection to being derogatory towards gay people. It was a word that had more than one definition.

These days there is no level of separation or disconnect, and any use of the word gay is in reference to gay people. If you use the word as an insult then you are being derogatory to gay people even if there was no context in how you used it towards gay people.
