Probably want a smart TV, though it's not completely necessary. Mainly looking for a good brand I suppose.

I don't think they make non-smart TVs. My last two have been that even though I didn't want one.

The best TVs are the LG OLEDs. The picture quality cannot be beat. They are certainly more expensive but if you want the "best", that's your answer. I believe Costco is running a sale on these that ends today.

If you want cheap, Costco sells TVs from Hisense with built in Roku. The 55'' is $300, which is going to be hard to beat.

I haven't checked on this recently, but I'll note that the low end LG OLEDs have exactly the same picture quality as the high end ones - the more expensive models just add some bonus features you probably won't care about

Just want to mention again that Costco is running a sale on those LG OLEDs that ends TODAY on some of the models!

They've got 55'', 65'', and 77'' in store, though it might be the higher end C series rather than the A series. Not sure what the differences between the 2 are, but I think it's just "bells and whistles" and not picture quality.

They've got a 65'' A Series for only $1350, which is less than I paid for a 55'' a few years ago. Crazy! The sale for that one doesn't end today but I'm not sure it's available in store:

I've been thinking about upgrading from 55 to 65, but I just can't really justify it yet. Maybe when prices come down a bit more.

Yeah, its either an OLED if you want to throw down money, or you can get pretty much any 4k you want for $500 or so

I'm living bachelor right now, so I have money to burn. And I managed to talk myself out of the Series C, which saved $400, so I count that as a win

I might be getting a 65" LG C1 series next weekend. I've never had a top of the line TV, but we just bought a house and are finishing the basement and I think it would be a fantastic christening of the place. We'll see.

Are we talking top of the line or just a TV? Recommend something with true hdmi 2.1 if you game for future proofing reasons.

I would never go with an OLED due to burn-in personally.

I've not had any problems with burn in for the 3+ years I've had an OLED. I'm not aware of it being a big issue with newer screens but maybe it comes down to personal usage patterns.

From my understanding, it's not a concern for any average user. Unless you or going to watch/play the same thing every single day for hours on end, you won't see it. CNET has a pretty good article on it:

https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/oled-screen-burn-in-rare-could-still-ruin-tv-nintendo-switch/

How to avoid burn-in on an OLED screen

What can you do to prevent burn-in on that new TV? As we mentioned, vary what you watch a bit. In particular, don't watch something that has the same static areas displayed onscreen, nonstop for days on end.

The logos and news tickers on cable news channels are examples of those static areas -- they have elements that never move, and they remain on screen the entire time you're watching. That means if you leave your TV running Fox News, CNN, MSNBC or ESPN all day long and don't watch enough other programming, you're more likely to get burn-in. Or at least, image retention, which we'll discuss in a moment. If you play the same game for 8 hours a day, every day, the onscreen status display or HUD is also a likely culprit for burn-in.

To repeat, you can watch those channels, play games or whatever else to use your TV as a TV, your phone as a phone, etc. You just shouldn't watch only those channels, all day every day. And if that sounds extreme, know that emails I've gotten from readers about burn-in always have some variation on "well I only watched that channel for 5 hours a day." If that sounds like you, get an LCD.
As long as you vary what's displayed, chances are you'll never experience burn-in. That varied content will age your screen evenly. So in a 24-hour period you watch a movie, play some games, binge some TV shows, they're all varied enough that you should be fine.

The RTings torture test we mentioned above lasted the equivalent of 5 years of use and they still say "Our stance remains the same, we don't expect most people who watch varied content without static areas to experience burn-in issues with an OLED TV."

I have an LG C7 65". My TV has some pretty obvious burn-in from playing tons of hours of Genshin. Specifically, the health bar at the bottom.

It's very noticeable on a red screen. I've grown to live with it but I got pretty annoyed when I started noticing it. I probably won't replace my TV for another year or so.

If you do get an OLED I would modify the setting to where the backlight is not at 100 when gaming. And if you do game alot just be mindful of it and know that to keep burn-in from happening is to watch content like TV shows or movies that don't have any static images like health bars and such.

With that being said though, I'd still recommend LG OLEDS, they are phenomenal TVs, and the newer ones come with HDMI 2.1 ports, as most new TVs provide as well I'm sure.

Yeah burn in is unfortunately a very real issue for gamers who use OLEDs. I'm on my second one and I'm already noticing some burn in. _

I've had a C9 for about two years now, and it's hands-down the best TV I've ever seen in person. Going back to my parents' place and watching their Samsung LED I immediately notice the difference, and every non-OLED screen is unimpressive now. Burn in becomes less and less of an issue with each passing year's model, it seems. I've never witnessed it myself, and I use my C9 as a PC monitor as well as my main TV. Maybe I'll regret this one day, but so far I haven't had any such issue.

If you care about any above-60fps capabilities, you'll be a bit disappointed in the A series, but aside from that it'll easily be the best TV you've ever laid eyes on.
