They say they're going to rebound for next year but I dunno... Do you think E3 is dead? A lot of people feel it's not necessary anymore.

I know there's a vocal opinion that E3 was irrelevant and has been for years, but I enjoyed the yearly spectacle/tradition. I know we still get a big Sony press conference every year and multiple directs, but there was something about the live on-stage aspect of it that was truly special (not to mention the show floor stuff). I truly hope it comes back, even though it seems unlikely.

I think it might be outdated in a purely practical sense, but there's a lot to be said for the showmanship of the live on-stage reveals and buzz that generates. Livestreamed directs can never hope to match that imo.

I'm glad the FF7R reveal came in time tbh.

I'd still expect Nintendo to drop another long direct around the usual time and that's all I really care about for E3 anyhow

Yep, E3 is dead. It was on its way out even before the pandemic. While it is disappointing when you consider E3 at its height, from an audience perspective as long as there are still big summer shows from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo it doesnt really matter as those were the only shows that mattered for the last five shows maybe? The big downside for developers is that it was a large source of networking, but that was already more difficult as it was not in person also there are better events for that anyway.

half of the e3 showcases last year weren't even official e3 showcases so there's presumably still going to be plenty of "e3" content

Really? I'd always heard devs say E3 was the best event for networking. Do some of them disagree?

I thought E3 was permanently dead two years ago, when they canceled it right when COVID started. It's clearly not going to rebound, in part because they whine about the facilities being "dated" (a convention center is a convention center though) and Nintendo Directs can drop whenever Nintendo wants them to. Most games don't get announced at events anymore because of social media.

E3 was better when the big 3 revealed everything. It started to get a bit crap when everyone and their dad wanted their own press conference.

This. There were literally presentations that had nothing to do with gaming at all (Take Two's 2021 presentation). Glad they are shutting it down now.

the best E3 moment for me is probably staying up with Devolver Digital's after-show stream, namely the Wham City Mortal Kombat play segment

I see a bunch of sites that refer to it as an E3 panel. But, I wasn't able to locate what Take Two themselves said it would be.

Was the panel bad? I didn't watch it but reports seem to indicate it was exactly what Take-Two said it would be.

Really weird they aren't even doing it digitally, but I feel like they're still going to do something big for it because... well, they ought to. Having a big game show probably builds more hype in general regardless of it being live with people or not.

I look forward to just a digital showcase for all of this without the stuff nobody cares about like random actors saying words about a game their face is in, or big dance numbers, or other silly bullshit. I'll kind of miss the spectacle of it, but I don't think any of that sold anyone on a game even a little bit.
