Who should make the vehicle?

Upper price range of $35K. I can put up to $10K down, so I'd only have to finance around $25K

I was driving an HHR so my car taste is non-existant, so just about anything is valid.

Wouldn't mind sticking in a similar build (SUV/Hatchback)

Doesn't have to be brand spanking new but definitely within the past 3-6 years.

Toyota or Honda. anything else will just end up being an endless money pit.

my dad's Nissan he got in 2007? transmissions dying, engines fucked, wheels keep nearly coming off. dash board doesn't work. ACs dead. 80k miles.

my 2000 acura? 260k miles, engines great, transmissions great, and the ac still blows cold.
sure ive had to do some minor repairs, like the wheel bearing was messed up on one of my wheels, and the coolant thermometer died, but those were cheap fixes.

meanwhile my parents will likely need to get a new car once that transmission goes out completely.

You can only go up from an HHR. Except maybe if you get a Nissan Cube, I guess.

Just take half of that $10k and buy yourself a decent 2000s Toyota Camry

It'll probably outlast any brand new car you'd be making payments on for years

I have 275k on my 01 Tundra SR5 and 195k on my 01 Camry XLE. Only things I've done was a valve cover gasket on the Camry and new rear shocks. Tundra was a starter that I replaced myself at around 230k miles.

I do fluids myself and did a tune up on each at 180k miles. Fully loaded Toyota is what I would choose.

Toyotas and Hondas are notoriously pretty good about lasting a long time. If you're like my step dad who gets a new vehicle every 3 years or so it probably doesn't matter much but if you want the best chance for your car to actually last and not require a ton of maintenance beyond basic rotations/oil changes, those are your best bets

I ran an 08 HHR into the ground. Need something that I don't have to worry about babying.

Only thing that killed my HHR was my idiocy and hubris thinking I could push her too far, too hot.

Somebody mentioned a Honda CR-V potentially being a good vehicle for me to transition to, since it's not too entirely dissimilar from what I had.

As fate would have it, I rented a full size car and got stuck in a 2022 Malibu, which I was looking at as a potential buy. It's okay.

When I bought my last car I wanted a Toyota or a Honda, but because of my income had to settle on a Nissan Altima. Its treated me very well and I havent had any mechanical problems with it. Regardless, get something Japanese.

My only outstanding issue with Toyota is their dumb fucking decision to charge you monthly so you can use your fucking key fob.

Other than that I have no active gripes

Yeah my Altima's transmission got shot a year after I bought it. Luckily it was covered by my warranty but it took almost 2 months to fix.

The CX-5 is dead last in driver safety and assistant features. Almost four or five years out of date compared to the competition.

And I can't stand the knob. Ruined the whole thing for me when I rented one.
