Actually viewing the films in question is actually a big reason I've tried to distance myself from them recently. I typically do a good job keeping all this Internet drama out of my head regardless of whatever I post here might make it look like when actually watching some of the movies in question like Last Jedi, Terminator: Dark Fate, and what have you. Then I realized that those dummies' livelihood comes from analyzing industry trends which is why they seem to find anti-male agendas everywhere and I just felt sad.

This is a matter-of-fact accurate statement, Disney were all well and good with donating to DeSantis until they got the blowback they deserved for funding legislative bigotry while waving a pride flag

The issue is you're so caught up in culture wars that you've undoubtedly absorbed their rhetoric and implicitly view activism as something to deny rather than a moral good to encourage (depending). You say that you keep internet drama out of your head and yet you've plainly soaked in what you hear them saying, because this is the realm of your political engagement.

I genuinely laughed at his last post and how lacking in self awareness it was.

That was the point, I was explaining how I typically adopt a different mindset when actually watching the "controversial" movies in question which led me to that realization.

It does feel like at least 40% of modern film discourse revolves around accusations of identity politics though. What additionally didn't help is how I felt like movies such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow are more deserving of the label "message over plot" than something like Last Jedi or Captain Marvel, which led me to realize it's actually potential behind-the-scenes agendas the anti-progressive crowd is concerned about and not actual messages the movies themselves are trying to send. I guess since Wonder Woman and Black Widow are already popular even their bad movies are just allowed to be bad movies since there can't possibly be an agenda behind making them...but then this insinuates that only "popular" heroines are allowed to get their own movies which is revolting. Especially considering my main problem with modern cinema is over-reliance on established brand names, to the point I admire the MCU for basically being able to pass for an original IP in this day and age.

In my life its more like 5-10% and most of that is less accusatory and more "hey look at all this great diversity!". But we go to very different places for film discourse

Really solid so far though slightly more divisive than Doctor Strange 1. Lives up to the title and unapologetically Raimi, even moreso than his Spider-Man films were. I thought this might get harsher reviews based on some of the early reactions, this is better than I expected. There might be a minority of MCU diehards against it though.

From what I've seen, if you like Raimi you'll like this.

But peak Raimi is definitely an acquired taste.

How exactly are we defining peak Raimi?

Evil Dead 1? 2? Army of Darkness? Spider-Man 2?

Sounds more like the Evil Dead side, Spider-Man 2 is a bit less Raimi aside from that one scene.

Doctor Strange 1 came out when comic book movies looked like Batman v. Superman, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Suicide Squad. As long as Multiverse of Madness is within 20 percentage points of the original it might as well be better.

the potential of this relying too heavily on fan-service is worrisome

"peak raimi" sounds good, but I also just don't believe that Marvel would let him do whatever he wants carte blanche

At this point I'm mostly talking about the "YouTube randos" to get across how deep into the rabbit hole I fell. Your call whether or not that's an improvement.

I was also trying to explain how they do not color my views on the actual films, contrary to what it may seem. I was taken aback by how they decided Wandavision somehow had "identity politics", and while I think I know why I don't even want to imagine it.

But we don't need (or want) you to explain any of that. We just want you to stop talking about it.

I don't see why those things are mutually exclusive.

They arent! One can take precedence over the other though. Endgame is a good example of both working well together.

Now, if you want an actual MCU hot take thats my real opinion not some Youtube randos, the first half of Spider-Man No Way Home is better than the second half for this reason. It gets lost in the fanservice though I did still enjoy it.

I rewatched Dr Strange to prepare for this movie and this definitely would have worked better as a Disney+ series. Escalating from neurosurgeon to sorcerer fighting interdimensional gods needed a bit more setup than 2 hours.

Also going full Raimi would definitely make the second one infinitely better. Outside of the visuals, the first is terribly dull.

I actually think the first half is terribly dull relative to Marvel films, especially non origin films. On my first rewatch after seeing it in theaters I used the 10 second skip button pretty heavily. The film doesn't really pick up until the fight in the loft.

imo the first half of No Way Home is the weakest part of the entire trilogy

No sense of progression. He went from surgeon with broken hands to being the one responsible for fighting the bad guy for seemingly no reason when there were like 20 other wizards there training

The visuals take it to another tier but it's definitely one of the weakest films plot wise. I haven't actually sat down and ranked them all but at a glance it's hovering around the 9th or 10th worst film

I love the first Strange movie and that feels like the minority opinion to me, but I do love me some Benedict Cumberbatch

I definitely love Strange 1 more than I feel the general opinion is on it.

I like Doctor Strange, I didn't really find it to be all that boring at all, it's a little hard to fit the necessary character development into a 2 hour movie but I think they did as best they could given the circumstances to where Strange's confrontation against Dormammu feels earned

I enjoy Dr. Strange and Strange's time loop encounter against Dormammu is a top tier sequence

and also just realizing it's only a 1 month wait for Ms. Marvel phew, plus of course whenever I fit in Dr. Strange... and then Thor comes in while Ms. Marvel's still airing oh geez

I'm kinda most hyped we definitely gotta be getting an actual look at She-Hulk soon

Absolutely agree. It's personally my least favorite. The Dormammu fight is great though.

How you get to see it a day early?? :<

I've been doing my preparation for MoM. Watched Doctor Strange first and I still love that movie and definitely put it on the higher side of the films, especially origin movies. Then watched all of WandaVision again and that show still slaps. I think the finale is much better than the general audience seems to think, and one of the better finales of the D+ shows. Just finished No Way Home again and still love it of course. To top it all off, I'll watch a few What If episodes tomorrow and then I'll be ready!
