If they hadn't committed to spring 2023, I could see them pushing it back for a split release on the Switch's successor, but I'd be very, very surprised if we see that successor in a year's time with no news on it whatsoever, especially with the commitment to continue supporting MK8 with new DLC until the end of 2023. We might see a system announcement at E3 for a holiday 2023 release, and it wouldn't surprise me if this ends up ported to that system as a launch title, but it won't happen next spring. --- This is my signature. Pretty much. Not that they need anything more than that. It's less a matter of the tech not being ready for a new system and more a matter of the Switch still going very strong. People are still quite happily buying the Switch, there are plenty of new and upcoming games maintaining interest... Announcing a successor now would waste that momentum as prospective buyers opted to wait for that successor instead of buying a Switch. I'm more of the opinion Nintendo suffers from relying on gimmicks to their consoles, rather than making said gimmicks a flavor to improve the experience, but delving more into this opinion would take time I do not have at the moment since I'm about to go get ready for work. They really don't. They generally put more emphasis on doing something different and (hopefully) interesting with their systems than on simply making "the last one, but stronger," but in terms of the actual implementation of those features (which falls mostly to developers and not Nintendo), more often than not their use does enhance the experience. Using a gesture to throw Cappy in Odyssey instead of a button press, for example, actually feels better enough that it's my preferred way to play, despite having the option to press a button instead (unfortunately, that interferes with handheld play, but that's kind of inevitable). The use of the WiiU's gamepad as a map/inventory screen single-handedly turned Wind Waker from being a decent game to being a serious contender for my favourite 3D Zelda simply because of how much it streamlined the exploration that is so core to the overall game experience. Metroid Prime 3's use of wiimote aiming was generally a much better control scheme than the previous two's. Were there more gimmicky examples? Absolutely. The Wii in particular suffered from a massive influx of shovelware minigame compilations that were little more than tech demos. The WiiU and Switch, less so (the WiiU because no third parties cared about it, the Switch because the motion control thing was worn out thoroughly enough by the Wii that there wasn't much potential to sell shovelware), but they were still there (although I would have liked to see more asymmetric multiplayer games on the WiiU; Nintendo Land was actually great fun). That doesn't mean, however, that better applications of those features weren't there, with the DS in particular being an excellent example with countless games that put the touch screen to good use to create games that couldn't have existed otherwise. And, of course, there are plenty of games that don't use those gimmicks at all. "Nintendo relies on gimmicks instead of using them to improve games" is an incredibly shallow take that comes across as being roughly equivalent to "I didn't like Wii Sports so I sold my Wii and haven't played any Nintendo games since." It simply does not reflect the reality of what's available on these systems. Believing that Nintendo has suffered for that reliance also does not reflect the reality of the situation: The Wii and Switch were both tremendous successes, as much as the Wii fell off sharply later in life due to a lack of third party support in an era where multiplats began to dominate, and the WiiU failed overwhelmingly because of poor marketing (to this day, there are many people who don't understand that it's not just a Wii add-on) that prevented them from capitalizing on their head start. --- This is my signature. Barely more than a month ago the president of Nintendo said the Switch is halfway through its life cycle. They might do a relatively significant hardware revision by 2024 but anything more than hinting at a successor is not going to happen. The Switch is still selling like crazy and its first-party software is selling like crazy (Mario Kart 8 has sold like 45 million copies or something absurd). As obsessed with "4K Switch" as the games media is it just doesn't make sense for Nintendo to try and rush the console generation when everyone else already got away with like 10+ years of their previous hardware (which are still by-and-large getting a lot of cross-platform releases). HornedLion posted... Say what you will its going to win Game Of The Year 2022. Nintendo knows this, and figures Game Of The Year 2023 will have to do. They want that accolade. There's pretty much no way BotW2 won't win some GotY awards in whatever year it comes out. Elden Ring will also win some GotY awards this year regardless of what else comes out later. There are so many GotY awards out there that no individual one particularly matters, even if we put aside the fact that no gaming award is ever really going to matter except as a publicity boost (which is largely meaningless for both Elden Ring and any Zelda game; neither From nor Nintendo are lacking in publicity). If you like a game, just like the game. You don't need some self-declared game reviewing authority to validate your opinion for you. Dikitain posted... If anything, from what I have heard from people, Elden Ring has a pretty empty open world (which is usually the sign of a bad open world game). From what I've heard, it's "empty" in the sense that it doesn't pack the world with generic busywork quests, but the world is generally designed to be interesting to explore for exploration's sake. You can generally guarantee that trying to explore any given interesting-looking thing in the distance is going to result in some interesting fights, loot, and possibly story content, so it's worth checking out. It's not so much "revolutionary" as it is a departure from the trend seen in most of Ubisoft's games, which has become the modern standard for open worlds (a concept which has itself become very popular in the AAA space, with all the creative bankruptcy that comes with AAA milking). That trend has become a little stale, especially with how often it results in copy-pasting the same content repeatedly for the sake of populating an open world that's only as large as it is so they can brag about their map size, so people are pretty keen on any deviation from it (especially paired with Soulsborne's trademark high-quality combat and worldbuilding). How accurate is that impression? No idea. I need a few upgrades to be able to play it, so I haven't tried yet. That's been the basic gist of the praise I've seen for the game, though. --- This is my signature. It exists to keep people from skipping the last line of my posts. ... Copied to Clipboard!
