Or The Fresh Prince fighting a weird Confederate super-villain with a giant robot spider. He IS a good actor... when he's allowed to be. But most of the time (especially in his biggest, most memorable roles to the mainstream audience), he's just playing "The Fresh Prince". Because that's what Hollywood pays him to be. Every once in a while he'll get to show off his acting skill in something like Six Degrees of Separation or The Pursuit of Happyness (or even, you know, the more dramatic scenes/moments from The Fresh Prince itself), but most of the time they just want "Big Willy Style", so that's what he gives them. The staged part would be if they both agreed on the hit ahead of time, and it was planned to happen for ulterior reasons. A staged hit can still be a case of Chris Rock basically going "No man, just straight up hit me, make it look real." It's sort of like in wrestling. Some times wrestlers will use "worked punches" so they're not actually hitting each other but it mostly looks like they are (if they're done well), but sometimes they'll straight up "work stiff" and actually hit each other pretty hard just to make it look as real as possible (because it basically IS real). So long as both wrestlers agree in advance that they're going to be working stiff, usually no one gets permanently hurt for real and there's no hard feelings afterward. Though no, I doubt the slap was staged.
