Tbh, it is kinda true. Also the rare chance a female targeted franchise gets popular (something like Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, uhhhhhhh), fans of that series get bombarded with insults and shamed for liking them.

I can't think of a female targeted franchise that has done well and is generally well received. I feel like Hunger Games doesn't quite count.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but what exactly is The Babysitter's Club and how is it the female equivalence of Spiderman?

I haven't even heard about the Babysitters Club tv show. I remember the books. . Looking up on it it seems like it has great reviews and is widely praised.

But I don't know that you can compare it against the fanbase and nostalgia of the MCU.

I respect women.

But when will people learn that male and female psychology is just different? Is it that women are "trained" not to be obsessive about childhood stuff or that women just generally don't think like that?

Women can be obsessive about things they like btw, such as music bands prove.

The success of the Sex & The City reboot kinda squashes this, no?

I'm not quite sure what the argument exactly is. There are no big budget, $200 million dollar blockbuster movies that are aimed at women?

I think it's more of fact that there really aren't many "women only" movie subjects that would garner a big budget production.

I could be wrong though.

And are we just going to forget that comic books nerds were chastised for decades for reading comics? Basically between the day comicS were first printed to the moment Robert Downey Jr. madE Iron Man cool, NO ONE was out there puffing their chest about being a comic book geek.

It was series of books about preteen girls running a babysitting business and their lives.

My sister used to read those books a lot.

Maybe it was poorly advertised? I would have told her about it if I knew about this.

I straight up didn't know about it until a couple of weeks ago.
I saw it on Netflix and was like, "lolwhy?"

I wasn't a huge fan of the original show but I liked some of the books.

Fun Fact. A girl I used to hook up with played Stacey McGill in the original BSC TV show that came out back in 1990. We went to elementary and middle school together.

She was also played "Young Donna" in Born on the 4th of July.

That article's a good read too.

Here's a part that stuck out to me:

Do you wonder if its easier to dismiss shows about young girls? Ive been watching conversations about the Pixar movie Turning Red and realizing theres a lot of discomfort related to stories about girls who arent little children but are also not adults.

People are extremely uncomfortable with this period in girls lives. It seems to be the time of life that girls lose faith in themselves, and I think its because they dont see representation of where theyre actually at. Girls are expected to go straight from Doc McStuffins to Euphoria. Theyre not ready for TV about having sex, but they dont want to be little girls. So who are they? Its a really easy time for girls to define themselves solely by how theyre seen by other people and then you dont get your sense of self back until youre 35. What if you werent missing those 20 years?

What if you always got to be yourself and see yourself represented in a real way? And not have to be all about who thinks youre pretty or who thinks you have the right clothes? Or how old they think you are or how old they think you look? The Baby-Sitters Club speaks to so many girls because it meets them where they are. Its not about adults telling them who they are. Its not really about boys, although they have crushes, which is a realistic part of life at that age.

Theres something about stories geared to this age that always felt like hindsight from adults, as opposed to what it actually feels like to be that age. What we could do with The Baby-Sitters Club was make the girls as smart and interesting and mature as girls are without making it all about how other people see them. Its about how they see themselves.

"Hollywood" makes what they think will make them money.

If research shows that a Twilight reboot would make them a profit, it would be greenlit.

media isnt mutually exclusive. Women can enjoy a spider-man and lent can enjoy Babysitters Club. I think the difference here is the source material babysitters club probably only has one book about the stories while Spider-Man has several different iterations.

I think part of this comes down to flexibility of "boys" franchises in comparison to "girls" franchises. I'm using quotes because obviously there are going to be fans of the opposite gender for both. I feel like a lot of girls franchises are quite bit more tailored to specific age-ranges conceptually on top of being marketed to girls. Which can limit a francheses ability to "grow up" with its viewers.

Like the example they use is Babysitters Club, Spider-Man, and Star Wars. The concepts of Spider-Man and Star Wars are wide enough that you can fairly easily appeal to a whole bunch age-ranges. You can have children-friendly shows airing on Disney XD and more all-ages or even more-mature viewer shows and movies as well. Babysitters Club is just a lot hard to age-up as a concept without getting pretty wild (see Nancy Drew on the CW which is basically a horror mystery show).

I mean that is hardly the only reason. Merchandising and marketability is another big thing (BSC as a concept has a lot less potential to sell toys and shit). Then there is the fact that "boys" concepts are very action or comedy-focused which as it turns out, women both like action and comedy as well and are allowed to do so publicly so the "boys" franchises turn out to be much more "general public" franchises and thus make a lot more money. On the flip side the "girls" franchises are a lot more romance or fashion-focused. And for a litany of cultural reasons that run far deeper than media-franchises, men are a lot less likely to be into those concepts. So a Spider-Man movie might pull a 53-47 gender-split, something like Twilight will be 80-20.

Yeah definitely. I did find it interesting that despite actually mentioning periods briefly, the main thread of the film itself can basically be considered an allegory for having periods and puberty. Bodily changes. Embarrassing things that draw attention to you. Things that you don't understand and freak you out. The color red.

Like it's all right there.

And while I can't relate to being a girl, Chinese, or Canadian, I can relate to having been an awkward teen and thinking embarrassing stuff is basically the end of the world.

I really don't think this has anything to do with a gender thing. If anything, if the story featured a boy having a wet dream or something I don't think that would be any less controversial and would in fact be MORE controversial. I think puberty things are controversial in general, nothing to do with what gender you are

That being said there is not a LOT of media made for "young girls" and when it is it gets lampooned by sexist assholes. The latest She-Ra cartoon was very good and so many people shit all over it for being "woke garbage"
