I like those grid base strategy games and thinking about picking it up.

The one from 1994?

It's kinda dated now but I think it holds up

Which one? There's a bunch of titles in the series and quality swings a bit. The original ''X-COM'' is rough to play but a great game; the new reboot is very streamlined but still a ton of fun.

The older games were titled X-Com, while the reboot series started with XCom: Enemy Unknown. You can see the title difference in my Steam library.

They tend to be popular. If you are really interested in playing the series, I have a spare Steam key from Humble Bundle for the second game you can try, though it might not work because the publisher put all kinds of region locks on the keys. Don't have the first to give away though.

yes, aside from the atrocious accuracy.

not sure how an elite of the elite soldier could miss with a shotgun from under 5 feet.

Xcom 2 is the way to go. Make sure to pick up the WOTC expansion as well as it adds a lot of content and challenge

X-COM from 1994 is titled either UFO Defense or Enemy Unknown.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is from 2012.
There's also The Bureau: XCOM Declassified from 2013.

And Hypnox has XCom 2, region locks didn't get in the way. :)

Who looks forward to their suffering when they try it for the first time?

I wouldn't reccomend WOTC for a first time player, it adds alot to an already full game, and imo it's also kind of a bad expansion that adds many redundencies and heaps on even more artificial difficulty, also the Lost are the worst enemy/mechanic ever concieved in a strategy game.

Vanilla is great on it's own, and many mods are updated for both versions.

the game actually fudges the accuracy in your favor, much moreso on lower difficulties (and even more when you are struggling, like if you've already missed that turn or don't have many squad members left)

i'm convinced fire emblem's constant use of double RN (where, for example, a stated 90% chance to hit is actually a 99% chance, because it rolls twice and takes the better outcome. or a displayed enemy hit rate of of 25% is actually 12.75%) has spoiled gamers tbh

edit: actually wait double rn wasn't exactly that but either way it was massively in the player's favor

shots are scripted before you take them. if you reload, and move to the same spot, and shot at the same enemy, it will miss again.

if you move someone else first, and the do the exact same thing, it can be a hit

its scripted one single action in advance

reload before that lol

deterministic RNG only hurts people trying to take advantage of RNG in a very lazy way

Yeah they're great. The original Xcom is endlessly playable with the amount of mods available. You can turn it into any game you want. One of my favorite mod packs makes everything X-Files themed.

Don't waste your time on Phoenix Point. It's a scam where the developers begged for money to make the game then screwed their funders to look for the Epic handout. Once they got that they farted out an incomplete, ugly game because quality wasn't important; they got their money already.
