Wtf, guys!?

When I was 16 I got my first job at a super market. Had Italian bosses but then one day they sold it to a Korean family. Anyway, I did security/bag check and would casually draw on my down time. No one ever had a issue. But if I began to draw DBZ characters they would lose their shit. Like it didnt make sense. I draw a huge cock and balls, veins, foreskin and all and theyre like:
I draw Gohan and its like I shot someone.

Whatever. Idc. I moved on with my life and forgot this weird ass memory.

But then I went to my local tea shop. One of the women there, who I absolutely love to discuss tea with, is Korean. Weve had many chats. Always extremely pleasant and cheerful. She asked me what was new with me in terms of Tea, and I told her I was awaiting a brand new authentic Kyusu teapot for my loose leaf sencha tea. Both the tea pot and tea are Japanese. She then went from Kool-Aid smile to dead serious, turned her back on me, and began to talk to the next patrons. Straight up ended our chat the moment I mentioned something Japanese.

Look, idk wtf is up with this but if anyone has any insight Id like to know. Makes me uncomfortable. Jews dont even act like this towards Germans.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi's invasions of Korea.

Okay, thank you for this.

Did some reading and TL;DR version seems to be:
Japan wants to dominate China
Korea refused to let Japan through to China for many reasons
Japan conquered Korea
Japan was driven out by China

Seems like it all worked out in the end. And this was 500 years ago!? The Mexican-American War was 150 years ago, and we love ourselves some burritos. The movie Coco was a great fucking kids movie, too.

I don't get it, either

UK, France, and Germany spent centuries killing the shit out of each other and now they're all close allies.

Meanwhile, South Korea isn't only still pissed about WW2, they still are mad about...

Yeah, that. Literally over 400 years ago, and not particularly noteworthy as far as invasions or warfare go. Japan lost pretty handily both times.

...Is Japan still mad at Korea and China for the Yuan Dynasty's invasions?

Did Mexico conquer America for 35 years?

Plus, Japan stopped occupying Korea in 1945, where the fuck did you 500 from?

I'm a history and politics idiot, but I have heard that Koreans and Japanese hate each other. I've even heard that in Korea, they make "I hate Japan" posters.

There is an episode of Kim's Convenience (actually I think there are a couple) where in the cold open they talk about how Korean's hate Japan; the invasions, occupations and war crimes aside, apparently us Westerners used to spell Korea with a C until the 50's when relations with Japan and the West started to normalize and then we started spelling Korea with a K so it would be listed alphabetically after Japan, and they have never forgiven Japan for this insult.

Going by Wikipedia, "Korea" originates with a guy who lived 1630-1692, so not that recent.

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2003-sep-15-fg-corea15-story.html

Yes, say Korean scholars and politicians who have begun a drive to change the official English-language name of their country to Corea. The seemingly arcane campaign is based on an increasingly prevalent belief that the original C was switched to a K by the Japanese at the start of their 1910-45 occupation of the peninsula so that their lowly colonials would not precede them in the English alphabetical hierarchy.

https://murawaki.org/misc/corea.html

Some Koreans, both in the North[1] and the South, claim that around a century ago, Japan changed the English spelling of Korea from Corea to Korea so that it would not precede Japan in the alphabetical order.[2][3] It is yet another conspiracy theory from Korea that is not to be taken seriously. However, digging into this problem reveals a lesser known story of Japan's role in the historical development of the word. In this article, I will show that Japanese is in fact the donor of European words for Korea. However, it was more than 4 centuries ago, not a century ago, that Europeans borrowed Japanese Krai ().

...

Unfortunately, Korean narratives of history are full of this kind of nationalist hypes. I recommend that you check independent sources before taking what they say at face value.

So remember that my source was a Canadian sitcom that the actors have since complained made Koreans look like a stereotype.

I also have a personal bias towards usage of the "k" glyph over the more romanized "c"; words traditionally spelt with a "K" were changed to being spelt with a "C" because of standardizations in spelling introduced by the invention of the printing press and the simple fact they had more "c" glyphs then they had "k" glyphs.

I will say though that a lot of us unintelligent people get mad at a certain ethnicity/religion etc. then project and hate a whole ethnicity/religion etc for a time period.

I used to rant about Jewish people like a madman despite people mistaking me for being Jewish a lot (which is racist just because I have a large head/nose I guess and nasally voice which are stereotypes by the media). I learned to confront my bigotry and respect all cultures and differences though through self reflection.

unfortunately some people never get the hate out of their system and we need to as a society devote more resources into combatting hatred and bigotry rather than just ignoring the problem.
