we aren't in the prime of THINK OF THE CHILDREN anymore but I also don't see many controversial games to begin with (other than the MKs and the CODs that we already argued over a bunch)

My point is that, yeah, maybe Advanced Wars SHOULDN'T be that controversial, but it...absolutely would be in the current climate. Bummer but I really can't blame Nintendo for taking the safe PR route.

I think it's complete and utter nonsense to delay Advance Wars indefinitely. If a crime simulator like Grand Theft Auto V and a war simulator like Call of Duty can both continue to sell millions of copies across multiple platforms, then it seems like a pointless double standard to not release Advance Wars.

I don't think GTAV has much to do with Russia (correct me if I'm wrong) and it doesn't sound like there's a new CoD any time soon.

I can agree with this, but it's based on tone. Advance Wars is a game meant to test skills and it also has a more lighthearted tone, so people can appreciate it as a game and not take it as exemplifying the real deal. Duty Calls has a gritty, realistic tone so certain kinds of people think of war in the manner is presents. It's subconscious, and not everyone is like this, but an FPS gets people to think of war as a "game."

I don't think I can take this argument seriously because they are both gamifying different aspects of war despite tone. CoD is gamifying the violent, personal aspect while Advance Wars is gamifying the strategic aspect. Civ is doing the same thing and it's also cartoony, not as much but I wouldn't call it "gritty" or "realistic."

And the strategy of war being gamified is super obvious if you look at all the armchair military strategists that have popped up over the last few weeks. Or like, the fact that our military literally plays war games and that's where strategy gaming originates from in the first place.

......wow I think I got WAY off topic here lmao. I'm not arguing that Advance Wars or other games did this just that our society's understanding of war is already heavily gamified

I think cyko was coming more from the standpoint of "Game glorifying bad thing" which is admittedly a bit off the original point of "AW has not-russia AND war so must ban" but was still discussed here.

I do think if we're talking "games that set bad examples" though that GTA is a much better example than call of duty.

War strategy is a game, but not a fun one. And perhaps part of why I think people feel differently about Advance Wars is a matter of audience. A lot of the people who play shooty shooty bang bang games wouldn't be able to figure out a strategy game like Advance Wars. I don't think those people could figure out war, either.

Respectfully, the people doing actual wars can not figure out wars, so I don't think this factors into the equation at all.

I do also want to say, because I sense some vitriol towards FPS's here, it's not as if every person who enjoys FPS games are just...incapable of higher thought or something. I enjoy playing halo. I also enjoy advance wars and other strategy games. Sometimes twitchy games are just also fun. If one wants to argue that games like CoD portray war in a negative light, then okay, but when the argument pivots to "People who play fps's are dumb" that feels a little generalizing.

This even exists in dual strike I think! You get like 8 palletes per CO in that game, it would be so easy

In Japan, Olaf is a little more Santa-looking in general.There are actually a lot of character design changes for the COs between regions. Drake is a pirate in Japan for example.

Yeah, I honestly think it's a really interesting example of localization. The Japanese designs like Pirate Drake and Santa Olaf are really funny, but ultimately I think the American version comes out better, with a more deliberate and consistent aesthetic to its character designs.

Yeah I agree that as neat as they are, the international designs are better. Some of them had a lot of work they had to out in to change them, it's impressive. And makes me wonder if the devs prefered them maybe even.

I feel like they did, because they're using the international versions for Reboot Camp, EXCEPT for Grit where they're using the cowboy version, which makes sense because that is the one that I think is a wash either way.

Actually I dunno about Sonja, they might be using the japanese version for her too

Cowboy Grit became the international standard in Dual Strike.

Huh, you're right. All the official art I'm searching (and the youtube thumbnails for videos) shows the cowboy hat, but the gameplay footage I can find for the US release shows him without it. I also distinctly remember him having the cowboy hat when playing it as a kid so I think I Mandela Effect'd myself here.

Probably not - it IS an alternate costume you can unlock. But the 'international' version is his default.

Bruh you are delusional if you think figuring out Advance Wars equates to any understanding of how real war works. I'd take the FPS crowd any day in that battle

IIRC in the original Battlefield (1942) a human can survive a direct hit from a rocket launcher(but OHKO if it hit near it). I always found it weird

Why would you find that weird? Team Fortress 2 proves that rocket launchers are excellent tools to safely launch someone into the air when fired at the ground directly below their feet.

Someone brought this up before but it bears repeating, this has NOTHING to do with the game's themes itself being considered too offensive. Nintendo just really doesn't want the bad optics of putting up posters in Walmart and ads everywhere for a game all about "War" at the dawn of a major, horrifying war. It doesn't matter how cartoony or non-violent the content is, or how distasteful the content in other games is. It's just a PR thing.
