No slide mechanic so your control of the character just feels so limited and boxed in. Have to beat the entire level without dying to get the gem and you only have one shot at the bonus round so you have to complete that without dying too. Compound that with a trash save system that if you game over you have to repeat levels and possibly gems you've already beaten and gotten before.

I dont understand why people say the remake is harder. The hitboxes are a bit less forgiving (aka more accurate) but you can make an adjustment to that pretty easily, I did. Being able to get gems while still dying in the level (except for the color gems) and being able to repeat bonus levels (and not have them count towards dying for color gem levels) is a big step towards easier than a physics adjustment. I don't think people that say the N Sane Trilogy version of Crash 1 is harder remember just how hard the original actually was. Especially if you're going for 100%

The original crash 1 is my favorite for a quick play through, but I would never try to go for the gems in the original.

Love the OG Crash 1. Love the gem challenges, the atmosphere is dark and mysterious and the journey feels more cohesive and builds more as you trek through the 3 islands.

I wouldn't say it's trash just dated and not as polished as the sequels but still a solid game.

I don't know about trash, I mean if you're complaining about difficulty I heard 4 is even worse in terms of what you're describing.

I didn't even grow up with 1, 2 and 3 were my first crash games, namely 2 (and 3)

It took until the remake for me to finally beat Crash 1, because when I tried it on psn classics, the game was borderline unplayable. Same with Spyro really, I couldn't sit through the games so the remakes helped to make them tolerable with the quality of life adjustments and improvements.

I haven't played Crash 4. What's the source of the difficulty in that game? If it's just challenging platforming but they give you decent tools to use, I'm all about it. For me the difficulty of Crash 1 is not being able to slide jump. In 2 and 3 I just feel so in control of the movement and the slide is a big part of that. Even before the powerups in 3 I just feel way better than Crash 1. I haven't attempted any relic runs in Crash 1 but I will say I have 18 platinums in Crash 2, still working on the others, and to me they were all fun to achieve. I don't even know if I want to try to go for relics in Crash 1 just because of the mechanics it doesn't even seem like they'd be any fun to get

The source of difficulty in Crash 4 is the levels being incredibly long and demanding absolute perfection in regards to finding boxes that are hidden and almost never dying, and the punishment for failing is extreme. It's one or several absolutely too long load screens.

Also in time trial you have to constantly press a button, which is really fucking tedious on your fingers.

Or so I heard. I never actually beat the game.

But also, Crash 2 > 1 > 3

By never dying do you mean checkpoint boxes are scarce or do you mean you have to not die like in Crash 1? Because death routes have been a thing since Crash 2 if that's what you mean

Like rapidly tap it or hold it? Because in the N Sane trilogy you can just hold the trigger to continuously run once you get that power up, I just use my middle finger to hold the trigger and use my index finger and thumb to slide jump when I'm doing relic runs

Every single level has a VCR tape where you cannot die before you reach it. Levels in Crash 4 are the longest in the series and those VCR tapes go further and further in the level as the game goes on.

On top of that you also get several gems for a level now. For;
- Dying three times or less
- Breaking all the crates
- Getting enough Wumpa Fruit

Then you've got time trials on top of that. Then you've also got a mirror level on top of that as well where you have to do everything again. Sometimes the visuals look different.

I'm not entirely sure but I think there's even more stuff on top of that. Oh and also there are levels where you play as an alternative character but guess what? Half of those levels are recycled from standard Crash/Coco levels where the same gem rules apply.

Sounds just like death routes. Labeled by skull and crossbones in the OG Crash 2. They'd also get further into the levels as you progressed through the game so doesn't really seem like a new mechanic

Again, aside from collecting fruit nothing new. All depends on level design

I mean even in the old games multiple levels had the same backdrop and theme, just got a little more difficult as the game went on. There were like 3 or 4 jet ski and Pura levels for Coco in Crash 3, they simply got more intricate as you got further into the game.

Ngl I kinda really want to play Crash 4 now hearing about it lol. A lot of people bitched about the N Sane Trilogy when it came out but I didn't really find it to be any more difficult than the OGs personally so I just wanna see if it's really all that hard

See this is what I'm saying. So many people said that the Crash 1 remaster was so goddamn hard, but the OG Crash 1 was a bitch and a half itself, I dont think people really remember that.

I beat and 100%ed the OG Crash 1 and did the same for the N Sane Trilogy aside from the relics. I put off Crash 1 relics for as long as I could, but now that I've gotten all gold and mostly platinum relics in 2+3 it's starting to force me to go relic chasing in Crash 1, and frankly I just don't know if I even want to because I hate the mechanics of Crash 1 so much

I mean that there are collectables you get for dying less than 4 times in a level and collectables for finding all the boxes while never dying.

Which would be fine in another Crash game, even Crash 1. But the length of levels in Crash 4 and the difficulty of specific challenges within the levels are so extreme that it makes the whole thing very sadistic. And it's not like in Crash 3 where death routes remain open if you die before hitting a checkpoint. If you die you have to restart the level. And the load times are so fucking long.

I'm pretty sure you have to continuously press the speed button in Crash 4.

No I mean half of the level is exactly the same and you need to play it again.

Because of mirror levels and the way gems work you need to replay the same levels constantly in order to 100% it.

The only time I felt the difficulty was excessive / unfair was in that quantum mask switching part near the end of the final (IIRC) level; but the sheer amount of completionist stuff in it can eat a dick.

With that being said I wouldn't say it's amazing either. "Off Beat" is an utterly incredible level both design and gameplay-wise, but I'd say it's really the only level that stood out as great; the rest was "good but nothing special".

The length of the levels in Crash 4 is the biggest issue. By the time I get through 1-2 levels, I feel exhausted and need to take a break from the game. It's why I've yet to get past World 2 or 3.

Crash 4 got up to what felt like kaizo difficulty in some spots in terms of level design if you're going for 106% completion.

The difficulty in crash 4 is Overblown. It's really not that bad and no level took over 5 attempts (except the polar levels, rush hour and toxic tunnels)
Platinum relics are pretty fun to do once you get the hang of the spin movements. It adds a new dimension to the gameplay which I found fun and satisfying. It feels badass timing the 3rd spin to get you across small gaps.
