She's definitely in the running. She's an off-brand Swordsmaster in a game where Swordsmasters are at their weakest. The best thing she has going for her is that Mani Katti is a really good Prf weapon in early game. But no mount, horrendous durability, and no enemy phase 1-2 option really hurts. Everything she can do a lot of units can do much better.

The problem is that dodge tank and crit machine is just not reliable. With Lyn's paper defense, when she inevitably doesn't dodge, she's gonna cost you a restart.

And FE7 is characterized by a lots of low quality enemies. Fact of the matter is that you don't need a ton of speed or crit to one round large swaths of enemy units. So Lyn's speed and skill are largely overkill (she also doesn't even get a Swordmasters crit bonus). But her lack of strength does hurt her. Despite her nutty speed she might not actually one round enemies unless she gets a crit (which is probably hovering in the 20% range). Meanwhile most the rest of your team is clearing enemies just fine despite only having okay speed.

Swords also suck in FE7. They don't have a good 1-2 range option, and Axe-weilding enemies become fairly uncommon after the first third of the game. So they are regularly facing situations where they are fighting against WTA with no ability to counter attack ranged opponents. You might say "no problem I'll just position her so she won't get counter-attacked" but that goes back to FE7's enemy philosophy. Most the units on your team and doing most of their clearing on enemy phase. You slap a javelin or hand axe on them, throw them in a pack of enemies and watch them all die on enemy phase. Lyn can't do that safely. And as a pure player phase unit she competes with mages who do a lot more damage, more safely and with staff utility.

And to make everything worse for Lyn she is competing either with Hector or Eliwood for promotion. Promoting Hector over her is a no brainer. He is a offensive juggernaut with hand-axe access. Lyn is completely incapable of competing with him. Eliwood is more similar to Lyn. He's a sword infantry unit who trades Lyn's overkill speed and skill for more rounded bulk and strength, but most everything I said about Lyn's combat applies to him. So that's where promotion comes in. Eliwood becomes a gimped Paladin. Which sounds bad but being a bad version of a great class is still pretty good. It gives him increased movement and javelin access, instantly fixing his old combat limitations. He also has a mount and high aid increasing his utility. He won't set the world on fire, but he is objectively a much more useful unit than before. Lyn promotes and gets...bows, the one weapon worse than swords. She effectively is the same unit with the same weaknesses just with higher stats. As far as net improvement to your team goes, Eliwood is a much better option.

Now luckily FE7 is hardly an overly difficult game and you can basically use whoever you want and still win so if you like Lyn, great, you can absolutely use her. But she is not a good unit by almost any measure.

Honestly, they are pretty similar. They are sword-locked units who's primary contribution comes from their early game Prf weapon. Then they take forever to promote. I actually give the advantage to Roy for a few reasons.

The WTA, enemy composition, and different weapon stats make Swords much better in FE6 than FE7, so being swordlocked isn't as detrimental. Effective weapons also had 3x Might compared to FE7's 2x Might so Roy can contribute a lot more with his Rapier than Lyn can with her Mani Katti.

Roy is a forced deploy. Which means that you aren't losing a deployment spot to use him. Lyn is a forced deploy on a couple of chapters but otherwise can happily spend the game on the bench. That means if you are using Lyn, who isn't a good unit, you aren't using a better unit. That's quite the opportunity cost that Roy doesn't have.

Roy is famous for his late promotion, but if Lyn is getting the second Heaven's Seal (and she really should be), then her promotion is basically as late as Roy's is. The big difference here is that while Lyn gets Bows on promotion, Roy gets the Binding Blade and that sword is OUTRAGEOUSLY busted. Like even if the only thing Roy did after promotion was use the Binding Blade to kill dragons that is still a much better contribution than anything Lyn provides after her promotion. He trivializes the hardest enemies in the game, and the Binding Blade is so busted that his stats literally don't matter, Roy could literally never get a single strength level up the entire game and still one round the toughest enemies in the game with the Binding Blade. That includes the final boss.

Roy sucks the most because Lyn is at least cute

It's honestly a downgrade.

She was serviceable in her game. Felt more comfortable using her than eliwood. Hector was a tank but I liked her character more than him.

I've only played two fire emblem games so I can't really compare her. Ike was a beast though. Beat the whole game with him solo

She is pretty frail from what I remember. I never really used her that much. Hector was so much better.

For some reason I preferred glass cannons in that game. I'd fuck whole enemy units up with just Matthew (promoted to assassin) and the other assassin (jafar?)

It has the same 2x Might that Durandal and Armads have, but the Dragon actually has defense and Lyn's offense is complete garbage so she barely can damage it anyway.

Because Lyn is the worst, most useless lord in the series.

Ah. I just remembered my Lyn doing single digit damage back in the day and figured she was getting a smaller boost. But yeah her STR grown sucks.

But hey, at least her single digit defense doesn't matter against the final boss!!
