That is apparently the one thing GRRM has completed in the past decade so I sure hope it's worthwhile

The director himself said they could've have a made a story without his help, but I'm not sure how much of that is cap since I'm still on Dark Souls 1 and they're doing this thing where they bombard you with loads of lore with no context and it's a little irritating as a result since I have no idea what any of it means rn

It's pretty good. It usually sits in the background, so if you don't give much of a shit you're not forced to interact with it. It's kind of like Metroid Prime in that regard

Plus they do this cool thing where the design of the areas themselves tell a bit of the story, and I love shit like that

I think this is part of the appeal of Souls game for some people.

I can confirm that at 9 hours into ER, I have very little idea what's going on.

I thought I was going crazy because everyone had a lot of good things to say about the story and I'm full of all questions and no answers. Why am I a raisin, who are these dudes I'm fighting, where the fuck am I, why do people praise the sun lol

I feel like Doom 2016/Eternal does this better since the premise is all you need to understand the game overall

I was expecting this to be like BOTW where you learn about the world from texts, the condition of certain buildings and talking to NPCs (all of which seem to whisper loudly to you like some odd ASMR) but nope

It's okay of course cause it's just a game end of the day, but I'd like to hopefully see what the buzz is all about in this area

basically, the opening cinematic provides the framework of the story, the dialogue from the NPCs the context (you might need to find them and exhaust dialogue options and/or do their side-quest), and item/weapon/armor/etc. descriptions help fill in the gaps.

a lot of content is missable/difficult to obtain, so a lot of players defer to others, like VaatiVidya, for example, for lore and story breakdowns.

I have beaten three souls games and did not understand what was going on in them well in any of them until after watching several lore videos on each. Between much of the context being in item descriptions, environmental details, missable NPCs or side quests, and major story elements that require our of the box thinking to even access, chances are low I'll ever put it together myself.

However, it's all intriguing enough for me to do hours of watching videos and reading discussions online about various characters/story elements. Playing the game is kind of one half of experiencing the story.

Doesnt seem very intriguing, strictly plot wise.

Big God gives Minor God Powerful Thing
Minor Gods son gets assassinated
Minor God gets pissed and breaks Powerful Thing
A bunch of peeps get exiled and Big God peaces out
Three remaining families fighting over the pieces
Big God sends some people (you) back to fix their shit

Thats the gist of it as far as I know. Basically quasi-royal families fighting over power. Sound familiar?

I do appreciate games that try to show you the entire story instead of tell you, but there has to be some sort of groundwork and the Souls games are more cryptic than anything else I've seen in video games. Zelda BOTW for instance doesn't outright show you all of what happened leading up to the actual game, but it shows you the important parts and IMO that's all we need. Bethesda games tend to do a good job of this with their side stories as well
