What are y'all favorite songs of all time? Can you think of an actual list of them? For me it's:

  1. You've Got A Friend in Me - Randy Newman
  2. Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
  3. The entirety of David Bowie's Hunky Dory album.
  4. Mr. Blue Sky - ELO
  5. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

I've only ever cited three songs as my favorites (and have been citing them for like 25 years now). I'd have a really hard time narrowing down every other song I like to get two more for a "top 5".

There's an argument to be made that I actually like other songs more now - but those are still the ones that I consider my top three in my head just because I'm so used to describing them that way, and because they're so tied up in my own personal sense of identity and nostalgia.

I don't really like hierarching things in general, though. Or saying any one movie/song/book/etc is my favorite. I much prefer just sort of ranking things on a pass/fail scale where I either love, like, dislike, or hate them (or am just kind of apathetic). Especially since which thing I love more on any given day can easily change depending on my mood. I have a very hard time saying "this is a list of my favorite songs, in order, top to bottom".

Though, as a bonus, this is what I'm currently using for the ring-tone on my phone:

Ehm... I don't know that I can narrow it down like that. I don't even think I could do it with bands, artists, or albums.
Edit: Eh, fuck it. Here are a bunch that popped into my head:

Round Here by Counting Crows
Fly From Heaven by Toad the Wet Sprocket
Schism by Tool
Burn by The Cure
Pillar of Davidson by Live (before they went to shit, Throwing Copper is a great album)
Tweeter and the Monkey Man by The Traveling Wilburys
The Chimbley Sweep by The Decemberists
Try Not to Breathe by REM
Shimmy by System of a Down
What It's Like by Everlast
Perfect by Alanis Morissette or Forgiven by Alanis Morissette. Was always confused that other songs from that album got picked over those two, tbh.
Bunch of Tom Petty songs, I suppose. Can't really narrow those down.
Eleanor Rigby or Come Together by The Beatles

Could think of more, but I'll spare you. There's no way I could narrow it down and this list is too long as is.

For nearly 10 years now, I've been telling myself I want to do an all-time Top 100, just for my own amusement. But damn, music is the hardest thing to rank because it's much more...finicky, than say, films or video games--it can change much more at the drop of a hat. I see 2 songs in this topic that would def make my Top 100 though.

That's impossible to name, but here's the top 5 most played according to iTunes (which I had to reinstall about a year ago so it lost all my data). These aren't my all time top 5, but the ones I've listened to more often recently than any others.

The Cowboy in the Continental Suit, by Marty Robbins
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftetdzHNtgI

Pirate Metal Drinking Crew, by Alestorm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z2yNxfBRM4

Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow), by the Monkees
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3ePA-y83ng

I Have Known Love, by Silver Apples
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEEKRcLerIg

Custom Machine, by Bruce & Terry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RfODerqtuc

What a weird selection. Western, Pirate Metal, Pop, Psychedelia, and Surf Rock.

depends on time and mood, wish youtube had a counter so i could see what played the most, there is also a big difference between heard the most favorite and mean something to you favorite, it's probably impossible to quantify tracks but i'll try picking some anyway, no way i can just pick 5 though

Hmmm. Impossible task, as everyone has said. I wonder what I would come up with off the top of my head. I suppose the following are the songs that I'm usually the most happy to have come up on my standard music mix right now:

1) Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Santa Esmerelda - Kill Bill - version) Great except for that whiny part.
2) Hotel California, acoustic version. Still strong college memories.
3) Ride (Vines). Or Green Day's Holiday or some other 2000ish punk.
4) Zeromus Black Mages? Need something video game on the list.
5) Piano Man.

Pink Floyd gets a special call out. I love Floyd...when I'm in the mood for Floyd, and at that point I listen to *gasp* albums. Maybe Us and Them to pick a track.

Skynyrd probably should have made my list somewhere also: they're well represented in my top 20 songs. Or Smells Like Teen Spirit. Or Superstition. Or Smashmouth's I'm a Believer. Or the theme from Top Gear 2. :)

tool - h. (all of nima tbh)

This album changed my life and how I look at music. Like I still catch details in this one that I didn't notice before and it's what? 25ish years old at this point? I mean I'm going to be digesting things on later Tool albums until I die too, but something happened with those guys between Opiate and nima that put them on their own level from that album afterwards. I've actually been taking a deep dive on Fear Innoculum lately and Tool is just...in their own dimension as a thing. That's not some hipster fanboy sentiment, that's just a thing that is.
