26 y/o Margaret Channon, a BLM Protester who torched FIVE Empty Police Vehicles during the tumultuous protest of the George Floyd Murder was sentenced to 5 YEARS in the big house!!

The Tacoma girl used aerosol can and a lighter as a makeshift flame thrower to burn unoccupied parked police vehicles in downtown Seattle soon after officers sprayed tear gas to disperse a massive crowd

She ran back and forth between the cars adding fires as necessary to destroy them

The burning police cars became some of the most indelible images of Seattle's unrest, overshadowing the thousands to demonstrated for racial justice with justifable anger

But Attorney Todd Greenberg said "She wasn't alone, Ms. Cannon set the tone for what that protest became moving forward. She left down seattle inf lames and in billowing smoke"

Millions across the country took to the streets after cellphone footage showed the murder of Floyd after Jerk Derek Chauvin kneeled on him for 8 minutes that caused his death

Channon acknolwedged the burning of the vehicles and smashing a verizon store window as she received one of the most harshest sentences.

She apologized in a letter to court acknowleding that BLM does not condone illegal acts and that as a white woman it was not her place to coopt the cause who apologized to the many workers and activists who have given decades of their lives to building to countermeasure police violence

Her mother wrote a letter saying Channon grew up in a family with a long history of civil service and citing destabiling effects of the pandemic, the protests and recent deaths of her 2 grandmothers pushed her over the edge.

They offered her to plead guilty to conspiracy rather than arson which would have enable her to argue for a lesser sentence but she refused citing she was not going to shift blame on others..and thus she got handed down the hammer

A prison sentence is certainly justified. 5 years feels a bit much, though.

Testing myself: would I say the same for someone who burnt empty police cars at a white nationalist rally? ...yeah, it would seem a bit much there also. I would have said a year or two for either off the top of my head.

But also, can we just appreciate that the prosecution literally tried to force her to admit she was part of some grand conspiracy to burn down the city and not a solo actor who lost her temper? Not even "we'll give you a lesser sentence if you give up co-conspirators," just "if you admit it was a conspiracy, we'll give you a lesser sentence." I guess they're desperate for help constructing the narrative that BLM is a dangerous terrorist conspiracy.

I mean, I applaud her for standing up for her principles and taking responsibility for her actions, but it's more than a little alarming that the prosecution is so transparently trying to peddle a narrative that discredits BLM.

Female privilege at work. Had a guy done this, they'd be looking at 15 years. Actually, probably a lot more because this was a literal act of terrorism involving major problem destruction and a direct attack on law enforcement.

But, I mean, 5 years is 5 years, especially since DAs have declined to press charges on other acts of property destruction in recent years.

Because apparently everybody suffering from the loss of grandparents goes out and sets fire to law enforcement vehicles in an act of literal terrorism? I don't get how any of that is an excuse.

Given that Zeus is, as a general rule, strongly against long prison sentences for all but the most egregious criminals, it says a lot that he's complaining so angrily about this particular case. Left-leaning centrism indeed...

I'm also against hypocritical sentencing policies. And, honestly, for a literal terrorist attack resulting in major destruction, five years is fucking NOTHING. Hell, you've suggested far longer punishments for TRESPASSING.

There's nothing incongruent about my suggestion, and it's completely congruent with your flexible moral stances to make that false claim and once again attempt to strawman.

You've championed/defended shorter sentences for crimes that actually did cause injury (lest we forget your fervent defense of the slap on the wrist received by a certain swimmer with a taste for inflicting "penetrative trauma" on unconscious women behind dumpsters). This was indeed a terrorist attack (by the definition of terrorism) and did cause a considerable amount of property damage, but let's not get carried away by ignoring that she didn't actually hurt anyone. Terrorism or no, this is just vandalism.
