I'm currently playing Great Ace Attorney and I wondered if Herlock Sholmes would be eligible for a contest. Based on the localisation, he would be because he's a distinct character from Sherlock Holmes. However, he might not be eligible based on the original Japanese version, where he is Sherlock Holmes, as Sherlock Holmes didn't originate as a video game character.

An exception was made for Geralt in the last character battle, so would the same thing happen for Sholmes if he got enough nominations to make the bracket? Then again, Phoenix is the only Ace Attorney character we've seen who has any contest strength, so Sholmes probably wouldn't make it past Round 1 anyway.

Are there any other characters for whom we could actually expect Allen to make the Geralt exception?

I'd say no because he's clearly Sherlock Holmes (and is named such in the Japanese version), but he'd be bad fodder regardless, so go for it.

Nah let's nominate Soseki Natsume instead

It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.

Dracula has been in IIRC (definitely has as Soma Cruz but I think he has as Dracula too)

He should be, based on Dracula's appearance in a contest

I think the difference there is that Herlock Sholmes is very clearly the same dude as the character in the stories, while Castlevania Dracula is not meant to be Bram Stoker's Dracula.

but like I said it's not like we're missing out on a juggernaut if he's ineligible so I'm fine with it either way

Are you kidding? Herlock has steampunk goggles, crazy dance moves, and hangs around with a little girl genius, is he really the same dude

he's depicted as being the dude the stories are based on

I guess you can parse it as the Great Ace Attorney versions of the Sherlock Holmes canon being different from the real world versions (because they are) but I think that's just a technicality

Unless they've changed it, Bram Stoker's Dracula is literally canon to Castlevania.
