So assuming all 40 win, they would make up 0.007% of total politicians in the US.

This is so bafflingly dumb I have to assume they're making some sort of mistake. Like they're only counting federal offices despite saying federal and local.

The alternative that they meant this literally as written is so incredibly insane I can't believe it.

This, not that it should be shocking theres extremely few black Republicans running for office, but that the number is astoundingly smaller than the astoundingly small number that was already expected.
