I went to get a pick-up order from Chili's tonight. I was going to use a Chili's gift card with like $4 left on it for part of the order. I get there the guy says my gift card is 0 balance and shows me the screen. The last time I was at Chili's was a month ago. The server I had most likely drained the rest of my gift card because I didn't tip her on my meal.

I'm honestly not sure if it's even worth calling anyone at Chili's to complain over $4 and cents. I don't have the receipt from that January visit.

What is the upside in you posting this?

Like logically it doesn't add up. She would not have known you didn't tip her until after she gave you the card back and you left the store.

So in one post you seemingly made up a story about you not tipping someone who makes 2 dollars an hour. And talking about oh well I am not going to worry about 4 dollars when in the story you just told us you were so tight with your money you didn't give someone a tip. Also with no proof you say she must have stolen it from you.

People alter card tips all the time. When my brother delivered pizzas multiple co-workers of his got fired for altering tips on credit card orders.

I'm just venting. I know there's not much I can do about it. It's my word versus the employee and it's been a month. My brother has worked various restaurant jobs over the years and a lot of his co-workers were shady.

That is true. Your gift card receipt tip would have showed zero, but if she wanted to (and wrongly so), she could have simply entered in a tip amount after the fact into the computer system

Is there a reason you didn't tip her, though? If it wasn't astronomically bad service, you really should tip your servers.

People are able to pay with a gift card, and the receipt would also show a tipping section (people can use gift card balances to tip). So, all it would take is a dishonest server to enter in a tip amount when the customer never actually did. This would result in a further decrease in balance on the card.

If so, touche to TC.

But now you sound anti-tip...

Look, I get the tipping situation actually hurts everyone, as giving appropriate wages would be better. However, fighting the system by harming workers is clearly not the solution.

I would disagree. I think tips as a majority of someone's wages is good in many cases (but maybe not all). In general, people who earn tips are trying to give someone a really good experience and great service in scenarios that are beyond the day-to-day for many of the people who are customers or guests.

As an example, I don't really expect my grocery store cashier to give me an amazing experience. It's nice if they smile and are talkative, but it really won't hurt my feelings as I'm just there trying to buy groceries.

I do, however, want to have a really great experience when dining out with friends on a Friday night or for a special occasion. I want it to be seamless and flawless. I want the server to be friendly and helpful.

If tipping wasn't a thing, I could easily see people doing the bare minimum to keep their job. No extra friendliness. No extra nothing. Just bland, bare basic service. In some scenarios, people want a really good experience and people who work on tips know what they need to do if they want that extra money.

I don't want to go out to a restaurant (or participate in other tipping scenarios) and be faced with someone who has no incentive to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for me.

I feel you missed my point. I am a very generous tipper. I have dated servers and have a soft spot for them. But it would be better if they were simply paid well and tipping wasn't crucial to their survival, as is true in many countries. People still do their job because it is their job to do so. And this is about them, not your Friday night.

I think I'll call and speak to a manager tomorrow morning. I just want to let them know what's going on in their restaurant and I won't be back there. There's nothing I want and I'll drop it. I have family/friends dealing with more serious theft cases recently.

perfectly reasonable, theft should at the very least be notified even if not serious
