I dont think overall exclusivity is the goal here at all. Microsoft has been trying to grow GamePass and Sony is going to be launching their apparently improved edition of PSNow. The exclusivity will be with streaming. I have no doubt that the games will still be available multi platform (with the usual timed exclusive stuff probably, and of course stuff like Halo or God of War).there is just too much money being left on the table not to do that. But getting a killer list of games for their streaming services is the goal here.

Ultimately yea, youre right, but this is no different than Disney+ and HBOMax having exclusive programming.

yeah but its not good there either. these services aren't competing based on their own merits, they are competing based on whatever exclusives they have. its bad for the customer

Microsoft have already said, multiple times, their acquisitions are exclusive barring existing contracts. Somehow people think they're losing money by not putting TES 6 on Playstation, somehow ignoring the fact that all of this is to grow their subscription service which makes a helluva lot more than $60 per head.

I think part of the plan by Microsoft/Sony is also to basically try to scare off the really big tech companies, like Amazon (who has an interest in getting into gaming since they own Twitch) and Google (who have also already tried to get into gaming with the Stadia), and Facebook was supposedly looking into buying Activision before Microsoft did.

Microsoft and Sony need to show the other giants looking in that they can keep up with the big boys (to keep the big boys out) rather than beating each other.

Streaming games is legitimately useless and having to buy games that were previously third party on locked down 8 year old hardware or not play at all is stupid

Google actually pointed at the Bethesda acquisition when they announced they were closing down studios so it did work there.

I'm neutral on it. In some ways I'll benefit. In some ways it'll be worse. It's just video games so whatever. 90% of people who care just worry about their box missing out on games they want to play than actual stuff that matters.

We've been told for a while that the way things were going isn't sustainable so this was going to be inevitable and I think the console market will be completely different soon anyway.

Theyre buying up past titles and franchises.

The talent behind making the games arent necessarily going to follow suit, and new startups will appear to make new hits and marquee franchises. Itll be fine.
