I've reached a point where I've been given the choice to lie to myself and accept defeat (and be obedient to someone who is wrong) or to quit my job. I'm physically incapable of backing down and I'm likely to lose my job tomorrow. This has been in my head all day long and I can't get it out. I've been given a task, I plainly do not want to do because I think that no matter how insignificant it is, it's wrong.
There's nothing I can do now but to admit defeat.

Just quit and run away from your mistakes instead of facing them

The only mistake I've made is sticking this job out for the past 6-8 months when the writing was already on the wall. If I had left sooner I was promised a position at another company. Now I'm too afraid that that position is no longer available.

Do the task, then quit later. If this is going to be a regular thing, you don't want to stick around, but you'll be in a better position to find a new job if you're still employed.

I bet you'll still have a job because you tend to be melodramatic about these things

This is the smart play. Back down because what you're getting worked up over probably isn't even remotely a big deal anyway, and then buy yourself the time to actively pursue other jobs. Once you've got one lined up, you can jump ship and take a shit on the boss' desk on the way out the door.

I ended up doing the task with the mindset that I am no longer going to put effort into my current position. I am now actively seeking employment elsewhere.
The input I've gotten from PotD and the two other places I discussed this were very valuable.

Good plan. Best of luck with the job hunt. By the sounds of things, you shouldn't have much trouble.

With the current state of the US job market, I'm rather grateful that I'm permanently disabled and can survive through continuing my education. Hopefully by 35, I'll have at least 1 phd and several other degrees. Then I'll just consult and get paid for simply having a big brain, physical body be damned.

That's basically where I am right now. If they want stupid, and I get to keep my job, so be it.
But the moment I'm offered not stupid, I'm taking it.

Hopefully. Last time I was looking for a job it took me 6 months, but back then I had the wrong attitude after my confidence was crushed by my previous employer. This time around I have no confidence issues and can actually speak my mind.
