I remember a creative writing teacher I had ( he was published, not some scrub) thought nearly all modern fantasy is just too heavily and obviously influenced by Tolkien to be anything other than derivative and B grade

Love love love The First Law series. But to each his own.

Something similar i loved that was loaded with a lot of dark humor was Kings Of The Wyld.

Most fantasy books are bad
You need to describe what you are actually looking for. While it may seem on the surface that ASoIaF and Mistborn don't have much in common, they actually have a number of similar elements.

If you are looking simply for "gritty fantasy" or "political fantasy" then say that, saying you like one book that has a million fantasy tropes and not another that has a million fantasy tropes doesn't do much to narrow things down.

If you like an easy enjoyable read that has lots of action and brutality, I found the Gotrek and Felix Warhammer series to be quite enjoyable.

The Discworld books are utterly fantastic and something everyone should read.

Comedic/Satire fantasy rather than anything serious however, but utterly wonderful books that actually often have some great insights into a vast range of things in the real world.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant; The Unbeliever.
-Stephen R. Donaldson

1st trilogy written in the 70s, inspired by the Lord of the Rings. 2nd trilogy written soon after. More books written 15-20 years later, but I never read those.

The first 6 are my favorite books of forever and I used to be an extremely voracious reader. High fantasy, high stakes.

TIL there's a difference between Terry Goodkind and Terry Pratchett. 41 books is a lot tbh.

The First Law I just found boring and the rest I think were just aimed a slightly younger audience maybe.

I dont know what else to tell ya. I just want interesting characters and a realistic world that isnt too high fantasy I guess?

for further context you absolutely hated The Last of Us 2 but I loved it. I also loved The Witcher 3. Disco Elysium. The Souls games even though theyre not Story heavy. I read a lot of non-fantasy books. Lately Ive enjoyed The Three Body Problem, The Pillars of the Earth, Hyperion.

not GOAT tier but a damn fun read through all of them (except the children stories).

The first First Law book is pretty bland, and it gets a lot better in the second book. That's a common opinion.

I love Mistborn but I understand that some people don't like the writing.

I agree on The Name of the Wind.

I recommend Bakker's Second Apocalypse series if you're okay with very dark fantasy. It's the only thing I've read where the worldbuilding comes close to Middle Earth and the political intrigue comes close to ASoIaF.
