While it may seem on the surface that ASoIaF and Mistborn don't have much in common, they actually have a number of similar elements. If you are looking simply for "gritty fantasy" or "political fantasy" then say that, saying you like one book that has a million fantasy tropes and not another that has a million fantasy tropes doesn't do much to narrow things down.
