Franchise would be dead if it weren't for the fact Pokemon itself was a phenomenon, but the games themselves have been lackluster for over a decade now

Nostalgia is a powerful drug and is about 50% of Nintendo's marketing now

I dunno dude being able to catch up to 150 Pokemons, use them to battle and level up and grow and battle other Pokemon and trainers' Pokemon was hella ambitious especially for a handheld game at the time.

What mechanic? You mean monster catching and using them to battle? Something that SMT has started way before-hand? Pokemon got popular because it was a young-audience kind of game and wasn't difficult.

Nethack came out in March of 1987, SMT came out in September of 1987. Nethack did monster catching first.

SMT is older than I am? What?

I've only played some of 5 (intend to beat it just haven't gotten much time to play lately), as well as persona 5 and 5 royal. I've played about 1/3rd of 4 Golden as well.

Yeah, first it was the light novel called Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei in 1986, then came the NES adaptation/pseudo-sequel game called Megami Tensei in 1987, which had the demon recruitment and negotiation.

Nethack is, in a very weird sense, a Simpson's-esque progenitor of video games as a whole. It's done, perhaps, a majority of the Video Game Things.

Was monster catching in Nethack at the time, though?

Anyway, Pokemon came up with a whole winning formula that really doesn't need much changing. Pick starter, rival fight, explore, gym, explore, gym, ..., E4... Compare that to other RPGs. It gets you attached to your monsters, controls the pace of difficulty while giving you plenty to explore, establishes and gets you attached to the world. It's great for new RPG players, people who literally can't read, and still entertains mature players. I don't think it's just capturing monsters, but the whole formula (and originally great world building) that grabs people's interest.

Because any game that tries just gets brushed off as a pokemon clone and isn't given a fair chance.

What's funny is I learned Japanese specifically for Megami Tensei and Dragon Quest V because I thought the idea of using monsters in your own party was the coolest thing ever. Pokemon blowing up later in the US was a pleasant surprise for me. Though I am not happy with where the franchise is now at all.

Never heard of the first three, but after a quick Google youve got the first two that came out in 1998, so they werent brushed off as Pokmon clones.. they legitimately were Pokmon clones. And then Siralim, from the looks of it, isnt better than Pokmon. Ive never played it, but a quick look at the reviews make it seem like it lacks the heart of what makes Pokmon great.

as for digimon, it never really had much similarities to Pokmon besides the monsters

I don't have any off the top of my head, but I recall it happening. Unfortunately I don't play pokemon or similar games so I can't really comment on the substance of the games and what works in similar games.

Dragon Quest Monsters might have began in 98 but its based on elements of gameplay in earlier Dragon Quest games. Which predate Pokemon . Apparently in Dragon Quest 5 specifically, you can catch and train monsters . Dragon Quest 5 released in Japan in 1992

In V a small subset of monsters can join your party. VI has a specific class that can catch a small subset of monsters (though this was changed to just recruiting them in the DS remake). But either way Megami Tensei allowed you to get the vast majority of enemies in the game to become your ally either through negotiation or fusion. Fusion was there from the start which makes the lack of breeding in the first Pokemon rather strange (DQM also had breeding from the start).

It's not (though as a big DQ fan, I kind of wish it was). It's definitely extremely well known to the point where the vast majority of people know of both here, but Pikachu shows up on random merchandise much more often. I sadly have yet to see a slime themed vending machine.

Also, pokemon only one I think that got:

2. Competitive multiplayer battling

Even if that were the case, Pikachu is immensely popular the world over, not just in Japan, whereas DQ is only really that big in Japan
