School House Sucks

Obviously the topic and poll are geared more towards people from English-speaking nations, particularly the U.S and Canada, but whatever.

Anyway, mine was always math. I'm as competent at the basic-level shit as the next guy, but long division and anything above it is going to make me give up fairly quickly.

I'm just glad the old teacher adage of "You're not going to be carrying a calculator in your pocket at all times" turned out to be utter bullshit.

history.

I know it's important, but the way it was taught, it was just memorizing dates and events.

it was super boring.

edit: nevermind, it was geography.

Don't worry about it, no one actually cares about the distinction.

Not really the same thing, but I had a related experience.

Way before my agoraphobia was officially diagnosed, in junior high metal shop, the teacher assumed that, because I didn't verbally communicate in any way, that I was R-word that I can't say on GameFAQs.

I only know that's what he thought because it's literally the word he used. Back then it wasn't as big a deal, though.

Math. I had math fear which I directly attribute to the big, loud buzzcut instructor I had grade 8-10. The guy knew his stuff but was impatient with everyone except his daughter and her best friend. After a while, people stopped asking for help and just took the "C" or whatever.

Despite coming away with the relevant qualifications in science (GCSEs here in the UK) I have gradually come to the conclusion that I basically know nothing about chemistry. Biology and physics I have fairly standard knowledge of, but I had to learn basically anything chemistry-related that applied to my masters at the time and it seemed like I was the only person having to do that.

Hah funny enough I had a similar experience once--one of those less understanding art teachers was a substitute teacher in a different class I had. Well she was absolutely floored when she noticed I had the highest grade in that class. Can tell she thought I was just an ultra-slow type

Foreign language, specifically American Sign Language.

It's not that it was hard in and of itself, but I couldn't manage it well with my other classes. How do you expect me to memorize all these fucking signs when I had to study for English, Math, History, Science, etc on the same day. Never got less than C in it, though.

english by far. reading shakespeare may have well been reading mandarin.

oddly enough, i read a few 'typical' english studies books for leisure (Gatsby, 1984, lord of the flies, etc) and they're WAY more enjoyable when you don't have to disect the themes and symbolisms.

Lmfao, that episode of king of the hill where bobby did not want to strip and shower with other dudes was crazy relatable.

Yeah, I used to get a ton of bad grades for gym because I hated stepping foot in that locker room....shit was beyond fowl smelling. What I used to do was just bring a pair of windbreaker pants with me, swap to that asap, and got the hell out of the locker room once it got to the point where it was like "yeah, I am mad close to failing gym".

Probably Phys Ed, although Im pretty sure they just gave us all passing grades anyway as long as we tried to do stuff. Im pretty sure I had undiagnosed asthma because any sort of aerobic exercise would kill me. Im also inflexible as fuck and not very coordinated. I could do a fuck ton of sit-ups and pull-ups and push-ups back in the day though so I would manage to eek my way through those dumb fitness tests. But you make me run the mile and Im hacking up a lung before I make it through the first lap.

In terms of actual grades, I pretty much failed Home Ec the year we had to use sewing machines (they didnt grade that class on an A-F scale but I got a non satisfactory mark). I was fuckin trash at that.

I was also pretty bad at art. Maybe if we had done like, design or digital media Id have done better but shit like painting or pottery is beyond me.

art was really bad for me because my cerebral palsy made doing a lot of simple things really annoying. i got an a for effort but it really hurt my self-confidence to know that i fucked up basically every project

i still got an a on maths and sciences but there were many things that made them annoying;
  • having to draw a circle on a protractor with one functioning hand
  • drawing graphs and charts in college statistics with my dysgraphia and difficulty drawing straight
  • nobody trusting me to do anything in labs so i had to just sit there half the time twiddling my thumbs despite having the highest grade in the class
  • this dumb biology lab that required me to cut out 196 pieces and glue them in a certain order. i took an extra 90 minutes doing the lab compared to everyone else and the teacher didn't even try to help me besides giving me extra time
  • the final for college physics was making a bridge and i struggled so hard with it that i got an a for effort despite not making a bridge

spanish was an easy subject but my lisp made speaking it really difficult. i can read it pretty well but having to prepare speeches was really hard because i struggle making certain sounds, even in english
