From the Guacamelee and Severed devs Drinkbox. It's an overhead ARPG that combines a lighthearted, weird fantasy world with Diablo/Gauntlet hack-and-slash, Final Fantasy's job system, and Fantasy Life's mission-based progression and it's seriously hard to put down. Technically there are "Roguelite elements" but it's just that the dungeon layouts are re-generated every time. Bit expensive right now but I was fine with it.

I had assumed from watching footage that this was mostly a roguelike just because the gameplay reminds me of every overhead dungeon-crawling roguelike I've ever seen. It certainly might be fun, and I respect what Drinkbox puts out, but I was going to wait until I heard some acclaim for it.

I guess this counts as the first bit of acclaim.

Is it that good? I've seen reviews saying the ending is bad.

I haven't actually finished it yet so I can't answer that complaint. Not something I expect to be up for Game of the Year for many people but it hits the right notes for me.

Ill be honest, the art style makes me want to vomit.

Yeah I've started this and am really enjoying it. I can feel how it might get super grindy towards the end but I'm enjoying trying to unlock all the different forms right now.

yeah, which is sort of strange since their previous games had beautiful stylized art...

but it's worth a try based on how good those games were, at least.

Played it for like 3 hours with a friend yesterday and we had a lot of fun. Just unlocked the ability to mix and match skills which is great.

He is mostly using the knight right now while I'm bouncing between turtle and ranger as my mains. Horse is awful to play as imo but the others are all fun. Just unlocked Mermaid (seems great) and magician (seems like it could be great or terrible).

How long is this game?

I'm probably more than halfway through NG+ with Steam saying 36 hours but I know I've had it running while AFK sometimes.

Probably a lot more comfortable to sleep on a mattress.

I got probably 85% through this game and don't have much intention to go back. Really fun, enjoyed it, but this end little bit is a kind of a grind and there's not much variety in the gameplay once you get past a certain point in the game/unlock most/all forms

I added this game to my wish list a few days ago but the art style really does seem off putting. Maybe I'll wait for a big price drop.

The difficulty does drop pretty hard after you hit a certain level of growth but it improves in NG+, which is designed as a challenge mode. All the dungeons get significant modifiers, everything scales to your level, and you don't need to bother with repeating quests.

Alright, finished NG+, which is a fast but enjoyable run. I'm done unless I want to replay at some point.

I saw a trailer for this on Game Pass today and was surprised how much I dug the vibes. I don't care for the character art but the environments look nice and the game appears to be utterly jam-packed with stuff. Might well give this a go...

Any word on if the ending is bad as Mac says? And is the endgame grind really awful >_>

The ending is fine, as far as I could tell. Not sure what makes it a "bad ending". As for the grind I don't know what it's like if you try maxing everything in NG but I was not that far through NG+ before maxing forms and hitting the level cap without grinding. I never upgraded all abilities but you don't even need to for achievements.

Havent beaten it yet but I'm still really enjoying it.
