There's a cinema guy in my favorite discord server. He called it an awe-inspiring masterpiece.

And like here's the thing about this guy, he's a snob. Watched the Cowboy Bebop anime, wasn't a big fan. Very against like DC and Marvel movies, CGI slugfests that feel like your brain is rotting. Pretty snobby, but I feel like he's direct and honest and I think he knows what he's talking about.

Dude called it an awe-inspiring masterpiece.

movies don't have to be fast to be well-paced

The director's first major movie was 5 hours long, but it never felt that it wasn't earned. I'm really looking forward to seeing this, and the other movie he made last year, which is also getting really good notices. People are saying that he's had the best year for any filmmaker since Francis Ford Coppola in 1974.

i never mentioned fast. good pacing usually means something interesting is always happening regardless if it's a slow/fast movie and the chance of that happening with an asian movie is far less than a hollywood movie.

again if i meant fast pacing i would have said fast instead of good pacing. slow burn movies usually take a while to get interesting(usually towards the end) and that doesn't mesh with the idea of good pacing.

If you want a film that is kinda similar to Parasite in the sense that it puts a light on poverty and social exclusion, I'd recommend Shoplifters by Hirokazu Kore-eda.

Person whose only exposure to Asian cinema is Parasite: You know, this Drive My Car movie is really giving me Parasite vibes!

I don't understand how slow burn and fast paced aren't diametrically opposed. That seems to me exactly what it means. You're using slow burn as if it's definitionally a negative. As far as I know, that's not how it's usually used.

Also yes. I ultimately prefer Parasite, but the two films definitely deal with strikingly similar themes in different ways, and they're both masterpieces by two of the best working directors.

not saying slow burn movies are a negative.. donnie darko apparently falls under this and the movie is awesome, just that asian movies have trouble being continually interesting in between the profound moments and eventually climax of the movie.

The Handmaiden is a good comparison to Parasite. Both Korean thrillers about people infiltrating a rich persons home.

and yeah nothing like Drive My Car. Which is terrific btw

that doesn't mean its pacing is bad though. it just means some people don't have the patience for it

I don't understand why that comment got this reaction. 3 hours is a long time to sit for one movie. Most movies these days, don't even break the 2 hour mark. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, surely you realize that the length is going to be off-putting to some people.

Parasite was decent, overrated AF
