Board 8 > What PS2 games should I get

Probably limit to a reasonable price range of like up to $30-40 or so via Amazon depending on the game, but I'll look into everything and might consider emulation for the more expensive ones anyway

In terms of genres I like the only games I've actually played for the PS2 are Katamari Damacy, its sequel, and Taiko Drum Master, which I all enjoyed but probably isn't much to go off of. So here are some of my top games from the past couple years:
Celeste
Portal, Portal 2
VA-11 HALL-A
Hades
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
Guilty Gear Strive
Monster Hunter Rise

Mister Mosquito (also has a Japan-only sequel you might not need Japanese knowledge to play)

Tales of the Abyss is a must-play even if you don't like JRPGs. It's incredibly polarizing but that's what makes it so good. Check eBay for that one.

i think the vast majority of great ps2 games have been ported to as many platforms as possible by now- the console was so wildly successful that there aren't many gems that were left to rot

i could recommend a bunch of stuff. final fantasies, metal gear solids, grand theft autos, personas, tony hawks, shadow of the colossus, soul caliburs, prince of persias, god of wars, kingdom hearts, all the random platformers and uncharteds and so on

but i don't know how many of those are "best played" on ps2

Was Dark Cloud ever ported?

First thought (other than Xenosaga trilogy, lol $30-$40 price range) were Ico and Shadow of the Colossus but yeah - both were remastered to PS3 and SotC got the full remake on PS4.

Only PS2 games I have that weren't remastered or remade were the Xenosaga trilogy, the two Katamari games you already mentioned, and...Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII.

I will not recommend that last one.

Culdcept (though if you have a 3ds you could get Revolt pretty cheaply, and it might be a little better to start with for someone new)
Bombastic (it's a sequel to Devil Dice)

Final Fantasy X

Persona 3 FES since that is the one amazing game from the system that has still yet to be remastered.

Also Shadow Hearts 1 and 2

the original .hack quadrilogy has never been remastered or remade and they're pretty ok if you like the first one

While my earlier suggestion was based on you liking Katamari Damacy, these are just some unique games I've played on PS2 that haven't been ported to my knowledge, no guarantee that you will like any of them
