I feel ya, but there are a lot of Americans who prefer the US to not intervene anywhere and also hate the US anyway.

So its like just try to think about something else and not be upset about whats happening there.

There arent as many places as you think. Even here, the GOP dreams of a Handmade Tale scenario. The former VP wouldnt be in the same room as a women alone because he didnt trust himself.

If the US had focused solely on Afghanistan, we could have overtaken them. The War on Terror was unpopular because it was a preemptive war against Iraq and a personal vendetta of George W. Bush. If all we did was go after the nation that attacked us, we would have seen far more in the way of enlistment because it would have been a noble cause. It might still have taken a decade or two to conquer a country the size of Texas, but it could have been done.

Say what you will about American imperialism, Afghanistan would be better off as a place where women can drive, achieve higher education, and walk about with their faces uncovered. There are some Republicans who are as bad as the Taliban, yes. But you're lying to yourself if you say America is worse.

I can't think of any other place where women need a male guardian to travel a certain distance from home.

and I've read the Qur'an maybe a couple times now. I don't remember seeing any provision in that book to justify what is going on here. even the full body coverings are subject to interpretation. (heck many Kurd women don't do it)

The Quran is only a small piece of the picture. Most of the bad stuff you see done in the name of Islam is based on a hadith. They are quotes and scriptures that occurred after the death of Muhammad that have been declared canonical by various sects within the religion. Sort of like how Christians consider the New testament stories canonical even though they were written long after Jesus died. A significant cause of conflict between Sunni and Shia Muslims is based on which Hadith they consider real or fake.

Similarly, a fatwa is a legal ruling made by an Islamic scholar that is considered by some sects and official application of Islamic law to a modern situation in the way that the US Supreme Court interprets law around cases.

Additionally, since Islam is the only one out of the three abrahamic religions to explicitly have guidance on jurisprudence, you see a larger concentration of theocratic nations applying 1400-year-old rules as law. Judaism and Christianity have guidelines that they want individuals to follow, but the Quran specifically has laws and prescribed punishments that leave little room for interpretation.

If you only ever read the quran, that would be sort of like looking at modern-day Catholicism and assuming that it's based purely on just the New testament and not hundreds of years of religious councils and Pope edicts.

well I'm not a big fan of later Christian interpretations of the bible either.
I stick to the source material.
probably why I don't belong to a church...anymore.
me, I don't think religion justifies electing an oppressor to rule over us; I think the onus is on us as individuals to try to lead a moral life.

I hate to break it to ya'll, but our endless drone campaign wasn't bringing women rights(it was putting them in graves though!). They had rights in Kabul, and that was about it, because the government we established had no legitimacy and immediately engaged in the most blatant and venal corruption imaginable and contracting out provincial "security" to equally corrupt and vastly more brutal warlords.

I guess the question is: how many more Afghans needed to die before women would be free?

Wrong. Women can still get abortions in most states.

Wrong. Equal pay act of 1963 makes it illegal for employers to pay women less for the same work.

Somewhat wrong. You can get your tubes tied after a certain age in most states although it can be hard to find a doctor to do it.

They didn't open fire on them. They fired in the air in an effort to disperse their protest, so the protesters ran, and a stampede occured as a result with several injured.

Obviously what they did was unacceptable, but they didn't shoot directly in the crowd. They of course have done much worse than this.

LOL. More like the country endured 20 years of aimless bombing campaigns and military raids that maybe secured some small amount of freedom for the people of Kabul at the cost of turning the countryside over warlords that made people nostalgic for the Taliban (and, in the end, made the Taliban vastly stronger than they were before we invaded!).

Again: how much blood must be spilled before women are free? How many wedding parties must be slaughtered? How many herdsmen and their wives have to be killed cowering in their homes or in ditches along the road to secure "freedom", whatever you think that means?
