He LOVE Disney movies so this alone speak to how bad it is.

The family is all rude, unsympathetic, power hungry and privilegied asses. Zero reason why she goes out of her way to save them and the magic. And it feels like the movie just treads water. No big adventure. And they articulate terribly in most of the songs.

I liked it, but my expectations were low, just something to watch before bed.

Yeah it wasn't the best. I kept waiting for her to set out on her adventure, but it all just happened in or around the house. Also there were too many characters so each one's development felt really rushed.

I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

I haven't seen Encanto but you basically just described why I dislike Coco. That bitch grandma and the rest of the family who didn't want him playing music was so unlikable I was just in a sour mood the rest of the movie.

I gathered that from the trailer alone tbqh. It looked so flat and the big childhood fantasy that plays out is a... Magical house? Zzz.

Then I can understand you finding it okay. We kinda expected a new Tangled/Frozen/Moana.

The main flaw which seeped through everything is lack of direction I guess.

Yeah, it defeats the feeling of investment and that something is at stake.

As Europeans, we also wonder why they made the family in both Coco (Mexico) and Encanto (Colombia) terrible people. It is kinda a bad look >_>

I've only seen Coco, but I don't think that the family came across as being bad, just tough - you could tell that they loved each other, but that they took it for granted that the kid would continue the family business, and they had a strong aversion to music, which we find out why.

they just thought that as adults, they knew better than him (which is often true), and felt they were ultimately looking after his best interests.

What, Encanto (and Coco) are both great.

Encanto I thought did a much better job tho of actually redeeming the family in the end, and showing that they were all suffering from their own stress and anxieties. It really humanized them, and made the whole thing work.

I loved it personally. It's definitely a bit more of a slow burn than a lot of other animated Disney films, but I think it really works for this movie, and makes the central family dynamics take precedence. It's super relatable, the music is great, and it's just a fun time all around.

i watched encanto and really liked it
and the family arent really jerks except isabella the protagonists older sister and even she stops being a jerk after she has her song.

and i was fine with the movie being fairly self contained. not every story needs to be about an epic adventure. a smaller tale works sometimes to and despite the magic the movie is really just about family and how sometimes you can hurt each other without meaning to

I watched most of it and I couldn't tell you a angle plot point

The use of color was outstanding tho, Mirabels outfit was adorable and beautiful, and the flower girls stuff was really cool

It is the same problem in both the English and the Swedish versions and they dont really have distinct South American accents in the Swedish version. The articulation of the vocals is smeared out and drown in the music.

Did we watch the same movie? Because the only people who treat Mirabel "badly" are Isabella and Abuela, and I use the word "badly" very loosely because that is the entire point of the movie. Everyone else in the family does not act any shape way or form what you put in your spoilers and the whole point of this movie is about family pressure and fixing broken family relationships. And the movie explains why she goes out of her way to help her family, because she loves them a lot, despite not having any miracles, which made Abuela push her to the side because she was so concern about keeping a good family image, which inadvertently caused all the pressure. Though I can think the main reason not a lot of westerners can relate to Mirabel is because of the individualistic way of thinking versus the collectivist way of thinking. Also no one I've seen who watched the film had any problems whatsoever understanding the music, that's just on your end.

The only criticism that I can see being valid is the lack of a big grand "adventure" that almost every disney film always seems to do, but that is because of the marketing being deceptive about it. For me, I love the fact that this movie does things very different from other Disney films that just feels like cookie cutters from each other. It's a self contained story that is heavy in metaphor about family. I love the fact that this movie doesn't have a "twist villain" like BH6 or Frozen or a grand adventure that takes away from the characters like Raya and Frozen 2.

Pretty much my thoughts here. The songs were very good for the most part.

For anyone who has not seen it and plans to: heads up, it's a bit of a musical. Even by Disney's standards.

If you're not into that...
