Torterra is a version of the World Turtle, a mythological being appearing in Chinese, Hindu and native American folklore. It carries the world on its back, much like how Torterra has both grass and a fully grown tree growing on its shell. That's why it's Grass/Ground - it's the World Turtle.

Infernape is based on the legend of Son Wukong, the trickster god whose epic journey across the continent of Asia has inspired fiction to this day, whether it's Dragon Ball, Enslaved: Journey to the West or the upcoming Son Wukong game rendered in what looks like Unreal Engine 5.

Son Wukong tends to be regarded as a good fighter, and the fire part comes into play when he survives 49 days in Laozi's furnace which grants him the power to see evil.
