Utter garbage. Nothing about this story has stuck with me other than the names of the main characters and the fact that Tenebrae made me laugh a few times.

So much wasted potential here, and I'm still scratching my head as to why the original cast doesn't come back as playable until the very end. It's like The Force Awakens if Han and Leia didn't show.

Tales of Symphonia 2: 3/10

I think the badness of this one is a little overstated, but it is still at best a mediocre JRPG plot and at worst annoying and repetitive.

After playing this a second time and thinking it over a little more, I really appreciate how deliberately constructed every aspect is, and I've realized that my initial disappointment with the ending was a testament to how effective it was at making me care about its mute main character.

I don't mind it, if only for Tenebrae being a decent troll. And also because I have no real attachment to ToS so 4.5/10.

I made it three hours or thereabouts. I lost to a boss (...Hawkie...) and gave up because of how Emil was intolerable, the way they desecrated the original, and gameplay reasons unrelated to this topic. The 1.5 is for Tenebrae, but this is fifty shades of self-insert fanfiction where a weakling Mary Sue can transform himself into an infallible badass, meets all his heroes, and gets a waifu voiced by Laura Bailey who gets wet at the sight of him. It's awful.

Its bad, but its not that bad. There is some decent dialogue here and there and it was the first Tales game to use motion capture which made the cutscenes pretty effective.

I mean the presentation of the narrative which can help with things like characterisation. This is best seen with the Uncharted games.

People gush a lot less about Final Fantasy 7's plot if they didn't use FMV cutscenes for the dramatic moments. Definitely not mutually exclusive elements.

Truly an achievement. Thought this would be by far the worst game in the series forever until Zestiria happened.

Oh is this a "presentation matters" discussion I hear

I think animation and voice acting both have an impact on the quality of a story, because they influence how successful it is at conveying its emotions. An overly stiff and motionless cutscene can be hard to get immersed in. I thought this was a big problem for FFXIV's A Realm Reborn section for example, particularly one scene where there's supposed to be a huge pitched battle going on but the game only shows you a set of onlookers standing around describing the battle. More detailed animations can do a lot to add personality and life to characters. Inside actually benefits from this compared to Limbo, there are way more contextual animations for the main character in Inside which helps sell the idea that he's going through a harrowing and distressing journey.
