And even then only one of them has any character development. And even then Vegeta has had as much character development in 33 years as a normal anime character gets in about two seasons (one season if the show/character is really good).

Yajirobe had a fleshed out character arc in Dragon Ball.
The fact that most people have never watched read the first half of the dragon Ball Manga or seen the Dragon Ball anime is depressing because it's leaps and bounds better than what came after.

Yajirobe is such a damn weird character when he first appears. At that moment, other than the recently freed Piccolo (and the yet-to-be-introduced Kami & Mr Popo), Goku is legit the strongest in the world.

And when he skirmishes with Yajirobe briefly, he says that hes never fought anyone as tough as Yajirobe. Not to mention Yajirobe then easily kills one of Piccolos minions - and these minions have been running around, effortlessly killing the strongest fighters in the world (including Kuririn).

So basically, hes this fat little dude with a sword, living by himself in the wild, with no real backstory, and as we later learn, no real ambition to train and actually get stronger and hes the strongest human being in the world. Stronger than legendary fighters like Roshi.

WTF.

He jumped out of a speeding car because he could run faster, then jumped the gap of a crater just to catch Goku. That's all he needs, baby.

As stated earlier, he's critical to beating Vegeta, and he's much more relevant in the original series.

At least Team Four Star did something with the characters

Pretty much anyone that wasn't Goku didn't go anywhere. Even Vegita was kind of a joke at the end of DBZ. I do find it funny that Toriyama wanted to make Gohan the main character, but no one gave a crap about Gohan, so he went back to Goku.
